Guatemala passes law allowing mothers to demand paternity tests

at 19:33 on August 22, 2008, EDT.
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

GUATEMALA CITY - Guatemala is allowing mothers to demand that men take DNA tests if they refuse to recognize a child as their own.

Presidential spokesman Fernando Barilla says the new measure will help reduce the number of single mothers in Guatemala. About 19 per cent of women in Guatemala City are raising children on their own. The law allows a judge to order a paternity test at a mother's request, and obligates any man determined to be the father to pay child support.

President Alvaro Colom signed the bill into law Friday.

The only problem I have with this is the possibly required invasive taking of DNA. Does this necessitate blood tests, or is it possible to collect sufficient samples from, say, cinching a shaft of hair or swabbing a cheek?
