MoveOn.org's New Anti-McCain Ad

If this, and their 'Betray Us' ad in the NYT are any indicator, I can only hope Moveon.org keeps making lots of ads before November.

Love it! Great ad, very much to the point and I'd LOVE to hear McCain's answer to that.

I have two daughters (5 & 2) and I sure don't need them to grow up in and possibly raise my grandchildren and my great-grand children in a century of war. McCain is an old man with a very old type of thinking.

It really is time to MOVE ON!

I. Love. It.

He can't have my kids, either.

Think about McCain's "100 year" comment. He said something to the effect that as long as American blood wasn't being shed, he was OK with the American military staying in Iraq for 100 years.

But what if American blood IS being shed? How long will he stay then?

If you take the literal interpretation of McCain's statement - or as Rush Limbaugh likes to say, add meaning to his words - John McCain has NO plans to leave Iraq under ANY circumstances during his term.

As much of a hippie as I am, my son still chose to join the military. So, I don't believe any of us can say what our children can or will do with their lives.

In my opinion, the ad makes no sense.

The ad is manipulative, like many political ads of all stripes that employ children in this fashion.

But the hidden message is in the hook. The mother is saying McCain can't "have" her child, because her unspoken fear, and MoveOn's implication, is that McCain's suggested extended presence in Iraq will compel the nation to reintroduce the draft at some point.

And still, a child is 18 at the point of a draft and will still make up his or her own mind.

The ad is indeed manipulative but I have no doubt the majority of the US will sit back ontheir asses and let a draft happen.

exactly Ivy. That is one o the hugest problems with the ad, and it betrays a reeeaaaaally warped view of parenthood, children, child-rearing, etc.

i'm sure that the following does not reflect all or most of your reasons but
i feel sorry for the boy, because obviously that mother thinks he is property and apparently she is going to do everything to make sure he doesn't grow up to be a man, and by that i mean an adult who makes his own decisions, specific decisions that are in some sense his own, not capable of being fully explained by recourse to the mother's wishes and parenting.
What mother would embarrass her child (he will be 15 years old someday, God willing, and is likely to know of the ad) in such a fashion making a public declaration about what he will or won't do when he is an adult, because "momma says"? Stoooopid.

Second of all, even were McCain to get elected and serve two terms her child would be 9 or 10.

third, and quite importantly, apparently the ad thinks nothing of mentioning a father of the child. Of course there are many single mothers (he may have run off, he may be dead, she may have been artificially inseminated, etc.) but i think it is no accident that MoveOn.org opts for an situation where the father is entirely absent from the scene or ad.

4th, the whole ad is based on and perpetuates the abominable '100 years of war in Iraq' smear of McCain, that Obama himself continues, (even after he race-baits the other day with a "warning" of the republican campaign's forthcoming smears.)
Shame on him for doing so, and shame on him for accepting the endorsement and support of MoveOn.org who has smeared General Petraeus with that disgusting ad, and also fearmongered on the Pope.

Negative. If you're drafted the choice is made for you. All you have left are reactions: you serve, you contest, or you flee. And not many contests are won.

Actually, we may not have a choice if things go badly. Suppose we still have 150,000 troops in Iraq including National Guardsmen in 3 years, and another major conflict arises? We'll need a draft. We sat back and let Bush invade Iraq and if a draft comes it's because of what we did and failed to do.

actually, we're on the same page on this because the decision the child will have in case of a draft is indeed serve, contest or flee. His mommy definitely won't be the one in control of that.

I used to get emails from MoveOn and I opted out of them last year because they are way too biased to me.

Or you do what neocon hero and PUSSY extraordinaire Ted Nugent did:

A. Don't change clothes for 30 days
B. Don't shower for 30 days
C. Eat nothing but burritos and fried food during this period
D. Defecate and urinate in pants for 10 days
E. Continue wearing those clothes when you go to the draft office

Ted Nugent is the perfect example of what TOTAL PUSSIES all neocons are.

Anyone that supports the Iraq war and is able to fight in it but won't, is a PUSSY.

An absolute fucking PUSSY.

I am pissed off right now. I have a friend (42 years old) that came back from a year in Afghanistan to a broken home and three alienated kids. And he was in the NAVY. That's right - our idiot president is sending NAVAL units to Afghanistan.

If pussies like those neocons that post here in support of the war but won't fight in it weren't such pussies, maybe my friend wouldn't be going through what so many of our older returning servicemen and women are facing. But at least he made it back alive.

I spit on ALL neocons that won't fight in this war. And that DAMN SURE includes a couple of people that post here.

They know who they are, and they know WHAT they are.
