because in theory anyone can come from nothing to lots of money through hard work and dedication. it is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them.

You know the USA never gets the credit it deserves for its propaganda machinery, "...I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love...with that kitty cat. And then on some dark, cold night I will steal away into your home...and punch you in the face!"

"Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" is the actual experession, so the whole thing is pretty relative depending on how brave you are.

like socialism it's all great in theory. however people are far from perfect. it is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them.

Well, we definitely have freedom, because our president said the terrorists hate us because of it. Second Funkiest White Man in America

I think that there is about 30-34% that still believe that. “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist.” Brazilian bishop Dom Hélder Câmara

a quick think and you can come up with quite a few countries that are just as "free" with freedom of speech etc, yet i always hear Americans go on about how free they are...? Is it just cuz its in your anthem? *pls don't take this as racism or anything like that* What baffles the crap out of my mind is Americans who loudly and proudly anounce they've got the only nation with free speech, the only one with equal rights for women, the only one where racial equlity is law (even if t isn't enforced) etc. when in reality the U.S. is severely lagging behind a good number of other western countries on all fronts. We are stardust. We are golden.

You gotta remember, not many Americans get a chance to learn about other countries until there is either a war, or someone actually travels to that country, or someone reads about that country. We always get what our leaders want us to know about a country. And then when we challenge those thoughts, we get labeled anti-american or what have you. “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. Not to say some other countries don't have opportunity.

The fact of the matter is that while the leaders are somewhat responsible for the American people not knowing jack-shit, the media needs to be held responsible as well. Journalism has been on the decline for 80 years and without an accurate version of a story from around the world, all people have is what their being given. If people would take responsibility for their own ignorance, that would be a good start. This requires effort in raising your kids, bringing information about other cultures and a general sensitivity to the fact that maybe you don't know everything. In an information age with the Internet, there's no excuse for being ignorant. Generally speaking, you aren’t learning much when your lips are moving.

We are unique in the world in that we have a first amendment, no other free? society has that. We are also unique, because we have vast access to internal government documents, which no other country can come close. Freedom is controlled by corporate power and vast propaganda systems, but that's another story. heh.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
umm but dont most western countries employ the same standards, but not directly named as a "first amendment"? i know: Canada New Zealand Australia UK (most of EU) all have similar freedoms just under different brands? But the information IS there, and it's available to anyone willing to look for it. I realize the government (yours, mine, and everybody else's) would prefer to control what we do and do not know, what we can and can not think, but luckily, we're not fully Orwellian yet. I guess what I want to know is, what would it take to get the people to wake up? We are stardust. We are golden.
