"When the Levees Broke" by Spike Lee

Spike Lee's Katrina Film Will Air on HBO
The Associated Press
Sunday, August 20, 2006; 3:37 PM

NEW YORK -- One of the most poignant interviews in the Hurricane Katrina documentary "When the Levees Broke" is given by a man who lost his mother in the aftermath of the storm, filmmaker Spike Lee said Sunday. In the interview, Herbert Freeman recalls his mother's death at New Orleans Convention Center and the moment he had to leave her body there as he and other evacuees were taken out of the city.

"Before he got on a bus _ he had a piece of paper, wrote his name, his cell number and her name and placed the paper between her fingers, her body," Lee said on ABC's "This Week."

I remember hearing this the day it was recorded. I remember the day of watching Anderson Cooper break down on CNN while he was touring the devestated areas...it was a very raw, heartbreaking experience for me that essentially showed me the government gives not one iota about the American people...I cried while I listened to this...it brought back the reality and mistrust all over again...

i agree, it's nothing new. all the more reason 2 continue shining light on the situation. and it's not just the average citizen... if the majority of citizens in that area of New Orleans had white faces the scenario would have been completely different. this nation wouldn't have stood 4 such an
atrocity happening 2 predominantly white amerikkkans. period.

I don't have HBO, but I'm sure that the show is done well and tells the truth about this tragedy. If I get the slightest chance to see it-I definitely will check it out. One year later these survivors are still being cast aside and that is truly sad.

You know damn well that Salt Lake City would have had Naval Carriers showing up to rescue the folks there. That's how far the government would have gone to rescue white folks. Katrina exposed the Republican parties true feelings about black people. There is no doubt about this and as provocative as Kanye Wests statent was, it's true. George Bush hates black people nod

Why did they stay? Because they were poor and didn't have a way out!. Support your disgusting president all you want but this whole nation watched for DAYS while he ignored a city full of black folk. The Republican party does not care about non-whites. The only use minorities are to that party is pawns for thier own power and gain. That's it.

not all of them... and for those that were too poor... it was the CITY's responsibility to get them out

LIE. from the day one, the city and state blocked aid efforts. and fro day 2 the cost guard was was lifting 1000 of people each day and moving them to city designated areas. once there the CITY ignored them.

The Republican party does not care about non-whites
.

that is something you simply can not support.

that my fried it the democrat party. they suck up to the "black vote" every cycle and then go back to ignoring them...(hell that is as least as supportable as what you said)

okay some of them were to poor to get out... and no one knows that better than their piece of crap mayor... so why didn't the mayor get them out? no his great idea... let them go to the dome AND then block food and water deliveries....

but anyway you slice it, it was the mayors job to get his people out of harms way, the FED response as bad as it was should have not been needed. if the mayor would have done his job this would have not been near as bad.

oh and for the record: just as many white people died (and a much higher %) than any other race.

You're absolutely right, the Fed response should not have been needed BUT IT WAS!!!!!. It was needed on the first day.....on the second day.....on the third day.....even on the fourth.

Bush was on vacation one of those days.

Playing guitar on another

Cutting cake on another:

All the while people were abandoned, day after day after day after day.....

But it's a comfort to know that the President finally showed up in the luxurious comfort of his private jet:

It can all be summed up like this:

People were suffering and dyin but our President had his priorities in order and that was to lax off and have a good time.

The Katrina survivors should never have to pay taxes ever again..... Anyone who defends Bush is the worst kind of partisan and the most dangerous in our society because they would rather defend the failure of a politician than their fellow American citizens disbelief
