What is it about this site and the downplaying of a black women's beauty?

I find it very interesting that weekly there is a post about a sister's looks, and what she lacks, compared to the European image of beauty.

...and yet you couldn't even find one example of a thread to post a link to. Also, wrong forum.

People are fans of Janet, but they get concerned when she expands and contracts like a blowfish evey other month (we all saw what that kind of living did to Luther), so they talk about it.

Saying that this site is downplaying black women's beauty over a handful of threads about one person in particular is really jumping to conclusions, and making a pretty big (and unfair) generalization of the people who frequent this site.

But everytime someone wants to address this issue, here comes the sarcasm or ppl are deemed as not having any sense when they want to discuss this specific issue. I know not to really have this discussion on this site because its not taken as an issue that is real for some black women.


This could have been nice discussion regarding images in the media, standards of beauty, etc that all women deal with but would could have had a conversation specific to black women.

I disagree. There are constant comments on this site in the tone of "ewww!" about Black people's looks. I'm not saying it happens every single day, but I'm never shocked when I see it. Let's not sleep - racism is in the WORLD, & it's on the Org too...

I don't think I've seen any threads like you have describe, however I don't look at all of them either. I think sometimes people are saying "ewww" to a particular persons look, not a black persons look specifically.

I think that all people of every race have beautiful people, average and down right ugly people. I don't recall anyone here putting down anyone's look because they are black. If you can locate one of these threads, some of us would like to see them.

I find these types of comments usually turn up in threads about Prince's women. I recall the recent "Why is Prince hyping up this Tamar chick?" thread contained a number of references to her being ugly.

Granted, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But, one can't help but notice how poorly Tamar was faring in comparison with Diamond, Pearl, Mayte, Vanity, Carmen, etc.

Similar threads have seen the equally gorgeous Nona Gaye treated the same way.

I'd venture to say the folks who typically make such comments might not frequent the P&R forum much.

Prince.org isn't especially prejudiced. It's users just reflect a prejudiced society in which black female beauty is downplayed or downright ignored.

Afterall it is the furthest possible from blonde, white and blue eyed.

People who believed org is free of racial prejudice are very denial as hell. Sometimes people on here are can be prejudiced without even realizing it. Those same people should find a way to overcome their prejudices and learn from them rather than denying it out of fear of being label as a racist. There is a difference between a person who is racially prejudice and a racist.
