"Oh Brother, Where art Thou"

Just watched this movie again. It had been a while and seeing it again reminded me of how powerful the religious, spiritual, and philosophical elements are in the movie. This movie totally moves me. In one moment I'm laughing, next moment I'm crying. I particularly love the baptism scene when the saints appear and walk to the river. In addition I like the part when Ulysses has a religious experience followed by the flood (which I think represents his baptism). Anyone want to expound some more or just sing praises or criticisms. Oh Brother easily goes on my list of all time favorite movies.

It is a great flick. It made me buy the only country album I'll probably ever own.

Ditto. But hey, since bluegrass is the hardest of the hardcore, we can actually brag that we have this album. biggrin

I bought the album too and went through a bluegrass stage, but I got bored too quick. Just seems that pure genres like blues and bluegrass are so repetitive.

I really loved this movie, too, it's more of a modern-day interpretation of Homer's 'The Iliad & the Odyessy'. Lots of symbolism, yes. smile I really loved how funny this movie was, I've never enjoyed George Cloony more than in this movie.

Co-sign that. I'm aware of all the odyssey reference, but that stuff is pretty loose and I think there are some other elements going on in there. The imagery alone in the two scenes I mentioned is amazing.

Bluegrass is intense. I love the Carter Family, they are honestly one of my favorite groups. I love their brand of gospel - "will the circle be unbroken," "God gave Noah the rainbow sign," all that good stuff. "In heaven, there is no depression..." I could go on and on. It's chilling music.

I sing that "go to sleep little babe" song to my daughter, by the way...

Anyway, this film traumatized me for life - it reminded me too much of my family. that was a tough era - both of my parents were born in '35 and spent the first decade of their lives moving from place to place as migrant workers.

Heh heh, and I asked my mom what she thought of, after she first saw it... she said it reminded her of my father, because he used to talk like those guys, saying things like "bonified." So funny. Anyway, I grew up hearing his funny old countrified gospel songs on guitar.

vive la "old timey" music!! woot!

Ulysses dialogue in the movie is genius. I have never felt the same about Clooney since. I could not imagine anyone else in the part.

The band that is on after the three girls is some of my husband's kin folks.

I would have loved the movie anyway.

Let's not forget one of the greatest movie lines in years, as Clooney confronts his wife, Holly Hunter, re: her telling their kids that he was hit by a train:

"You have put me . . . in an untenable situation . . . vis-a-vis my progeny!"
