20ten

I was reading everything concerning this album and all the "celebs" they got to review it. Some even being "blown away" with a Star Wars reference. Basically, this is a collection from the vaults, you can hear it. There are Revolution tracks in there overdubbed with Rosie Gaines. There's NPG stuff, track 77 (Rosie again). You can tell by the style that some of it's Sign of the times or around the world in a day sessions.

I will still say the best stuff he did was from the 80's, but to release an album and say it's new, when it's blatantly not, I dunno. It's nearly as bad as releasing crystal ball edited, like it was.

Massive shame,

Luke.

P.S: Get rid of Larry Graham, get away from the religion, be normal, dirty and produce some good stuff.

Stupid and ignorant post. It's all new material.

I.e Lavaux was written after Prince was driven through the Lavaux area in Switzerland in july 2009 on his way to Montreux

i.e Walk in Sand was written when Prince went to see Ana Moura in Portugal in July 2009 after his Montreux shows.

It's Shebly J on the vocals. She has a similar 'deep soul' kind of sound.

There's also no way it was recorded back in the 1980s IMO. With all the hundreds of outtakes from that era that are already circulating, it would seem a little strange that he would suddenly pull out an entire album's worth of material out of nowhere that no one has ever heard of before.

he did it before why cant he do that again? Make Yo Mama Happy, Cloreen Bacon Skin, Whats My name, Calhoun Square ...all the other tracks that we never heard of until printed still exsist...u think just because we got a couple of tracks from the vault that there is not anymore? lol

But seriously..I think most of it is new...Compassion, Beginning Endlessly, Act Of God and Lavaux sound "new" to me lyrically.

Even if it were the case, and I think it's been established that it's not, so what?

There's no statute of limitations on creativity. Many bands and artists release albums full of 'new' songs that have been knocking about for years.

For instance, the reason why all Damien Rice (age 37) lyrics sound like they were written by a whiny angst-ridden teenager is because everything he's released so far was written when he was a whiny angst-ridden teenager. He has something of a backlog, given that it took him years to get a recording contract.

Given that (generally speaking) people will usually have a period in their life when they are creatively prolific, after which they begin to slow down, it's not surprising that many of them will end up with a surplus of music, which will be filed away for later use during the creatively leaner 'old and crumbly' years.

We know Prince found ways to deal with some of his surplus, but if anything, I'm surprised that we don't get more old tracks dusted off and revamped.

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

The one that sounds old to me is "Act of God"... the reference to Saddam supports the theory that this track is a bit older.

I would disagree. He's referenced the wars a lot since they started. He's constantly making stabs at the US Government, whether well-founded or not. The Saddam reference was more about Weapons of Mass Destruction, and how they lied to get us into the war saying they were WMD, and they were not, in the end. They used Saddam as an excuse. That reference is still on people's minds and tongues today when the war is mentioned.

The very title does reference Bush's claim that God told him to go to war, which is still something brought up in war discussions today.

It also references people losing their homes, which is definitely something within the past 18 months, which makes it a newer track, in effect.

Actually, Clinton was the first to say that Saddam had WMD's, not Bush. They all lie.

It's not secret President Clinton was saying the same thing. But at that time, he did. What the US people never knew was that Saddam had disarmed himself, but kept up the fascade of being armed, to save face against the thread of Iran. It fooled even the US for a while. I don't know whether BUsh really thought there were WMD or not, but at some point, with intelligence the way it is, had to know that there were none. Colin Powell said later he knew, as did a lot of people, that there were no WMD when Bushy sent him to the UN or wherever else to state their case for it.

and the Sadaam statement does sound a bit dated since he's dead, but I think ernest makes a good point about the lines about people losing their homes making this track more likely a recent one.

"Weapons of Mass Destruction""Saddam""War on Terrorism" all make me think 0f 2001-2003. But people losing their homes has been happening anytime... I'm half an hour away from Detroit! But I'd have to look at the lyrics of the song, which I haven't.

Um Lucretia ... You know our boy is 50, you expect P to still be 'normal and dirty'? I didn't think he was 'normal' and I never considered his music 'dirty' but, those days are long gone. I still think 20Ten is a solid album and it sounds more LoTUSFLOW3R or MPLSoUND then anything else. If anything the 1999 sound is all in your face.

It's like people think LG brainwashed Prince or somethin', cat is 50yrs old, he's too old for that. What 50yr old do you know is like that? Anywho ... LoL

Firstly, it's wrong to say there are only a "couple" of outtakes floating around. There are HEAPS. And there are a lot more that are known to exist (by name) but are not circulating. Secondly, two of the songs you mentioned are from the 93-95 era (and if my memory is correct they were circulating prior to their release on Crystal Ball), and one is basically an unfinished jam that would never be released on any 'normal' album.

I stand by what I say. There's almost no way he could possibly pull out an entire album's worth of material that no one has ever heard of from the classic 80s era. The odd track, sure, but not an album's with the consistency of 20Ten. Look at how busy he was back then - album and associated artist albums released yearly, constant touring, constant life in the spotlight. Where would he find the time to record even more than what we know of?? Of course, I'd love to be proved wrong... but it ain't gonna happen lol

I do get tired of the myth that anything "good" he releases nowdays "must have come from the 80s". Not that you were suggesting that, but that mentality as demonstrated by Lucretia9.

I agree... I just don't trust any party at this time. One party allows terrorists to do these things, the others go after them even if they have already gotten rid of the weapons. Until the U.S. comes up with a better governing system, these problems will forever exist. There will never be peace until something truly changes. Instead of any one party having absolute power maybe??

Anyway, I think the song with the reference could just be him stating it in genral terms. Just a thought. When I write lyrics, I may use references to things that have already come and gone.
