Celebs bitching about not being invited for BET Prince tribute

Bilal Oliver, Melissa Morgan and others are still griping about not being invited to sing at the BET Awards. This is why I hate these tributes sometimes, because so many people want to use those occassions to fulfill their own agendas (reignite their comebacks, sell records, outdo others). I empathize for Anita Baker, because she really has a lot of respect and both have mutual admiration for each other's work and she definitlely would have added another dimension to the tribute. Some of these people need to get over themselves.

What did they say specifically?

Bilal Oliver (Bilal_Oliver) on Twitter

Another good question ... Why didn't I do Prince tribute at BET Awards? I wasn't invited. I would have liked to. I watched it.

Melissa Morgan disappointed about non-invite to BET Awards 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award

Why should they? Shit.E.T. never promoted them after their debuts. Bilal and Mel'isa would be better off singing for Prince at a private aftershow. That'll be nice for them to somehow do that. Mel'isa and Prince can do a duet of "Do Me Baby". biggrin

I thought Prince decided who was part of the tribute.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Sorry to stray from the path here, but I love your siggy, Genesia. When I was in high school, I loved Betsey Johnson's designs. That was...ummm....40+ yrs. ago. eek

Me'Lisa Morgan? Although she might have been more palatable than Patti LaBelle IMO, she would have been a sleeper. I guess I've never been a fan of [most of] those who cover Prince. If you can't do something unique with the song, leave it alone. Most artists should be intimidated to do Prince classics.

I heard that as well.

I follow Bilal on twitter.. he didn't seem upset about it... someone asked him why he didn't do the tribute and he said he wasn't invited. That was it. I don't know why folks want to make things out to be more than they are. I'd have the same answer if someone asked me why I wasn't part of the tribute. Womp womp.

As for ol girl.. yeah you sang the song... like a million years ago. Unfortunately no one cares anymore. Sucks but that's life.

Glad I'm not the only one who could have done w/o Patti's Purple Rain scream fest.

When's this tribute scheduled for? I've got the BET channel on a UK sat pick-up, not sure how far behind American listings it is though.

Happened already. But I'm sure BET will repeat the awards at some point in the near future.

That tribute was horrid to watch. The only good parts was watching Prince reaction to it.....Especially when Alicia crawled on the Piano........Other then that it was very disappointing...

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

I didn't even know that was up on their website.

Janelle Monae was probably the most memorable. The rest? Forgettable. And really NOT that good. I am so disappointed in Patti. I remember when she sang It's My Turn for this Diana Ross tribute at some awards show back in the day and she brought me to tears. This time??? Not so much. I wanted to mute my tv.

P was totally adorable tho accepting his award. love

I guess you're English too? That's the trouble with such a heavy US-centric site, I've never heard of most of the artists mentioned. And nor do I care for many of them when I do smile

Can you imagine a situation where he DIDN'T oversee/control/censor the whole thing?

A pretty large portion of Americans have probably never heard of them... which is probably why they weren't invited to participate in the tribubte. : wink

Weren't you? .I was but they wanted me to change the lyrics to some of older his songs to meet his criteria....I told them straight that there was no way I could sing "I wanna be your good friend with no intercourse" or "Little Red Hybrid Electric Car"
