Prince borrowing old songs for new albums.

Some known examples are:

"Love 4 1 Another" (1994) becoming "New World" on Emancipation (1996).

"Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful" (2006 sessions) released on LotusFlower (2009) with slightly altered title (sometimes considered misprint).

"The Question of U" (1985), "Joy In Repetition" (1986), "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" (1982), "We Can Funk" (1983), and "Still Would Stand All Time" (1988) for Graffiti Bridge (1990).

What are some others we might not know about/talk about often?

Future Soul Song was a demo from a couple of years ago

A lot of Lotusflow3r dates from years ago, maybe even as old as 2004/5, the 3121 sessions with Michael B and Sonny

Tick, Tick Bang is another GB track (I guessed you knew since you mentioned all the others).

Melody Cool and the title track are also from 1987.

Raspberry Beret, Strange Relationship, New Position and ICNTPOYM are from 1982.

Baby I'm A Star is from 1981 (or 82?).

Race is from 1991.

Yeah, I was going to mention the rest on GB but truncated it for brevity's sake. I guess that means "New Power Generation" was the only brand new track he created for the album?

And Theives I think that was the last track added (and the first single - which is a bit of a Prince fetish it would seem).

The title track to Graffiti Bridge. Not sure if you would also include "Pink Cashmere", "Pope", and "Peach" on the list.

"U're Gonna C Me"... "The Dance"... but those are all recent. I wonder what the largest gap is between a demo and a released recording? Tick Tick Bang was about 9 years, but who knows if there are others!?

All we know about can be found here: http://prince.org/msg/7/320445

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic is another one that pops-up (from 1988 or 1989 i think), and of course most of Times Squared, The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale and several Chaos & Disorder songs.

B-sides: i can think of She's Always In My Hair (1983), Girl (1982) and Feel U Up (1986)

Other revamped songs (though they weren't used on Prince albums) from Prince's early days are Wouldn't You Love To Love Me?, U and If I Love U 2Nite. Manic Monday is from 1983, Train is from 1986 and of course Chocolate (1983) and Jerk Out (1986). All the dates are from memory so i might be wrong by one or 2 years on some of them.

I can't think of any other right now but if u roam on Scififilmnerd's list i'm sure u'll find several others.

Does "old friends 4 sale" count? Well, it's on an album called "The Vault", so it can't be considered as a "new" album.

Definately Pink Cashmere, it's from 1988.

What i'd love 2 know is if the released version's orchestra has been overdubbed in 1988 as Scififilmnerd suggests or if it was added in 93 for The Hits.

Wow - this is a testament to Prince's timelessness -- "We Can Funk" was written in the early 80's - it sounds so much more modern that that. Amazing.

The song itself went through many iterations, but the track you hear on Graffiti Bridge is, with few additions, lifted right from 1983. He used the basic tracks again when he pulled it out in 1989 for use w/ GB. You can hear Susannah's background vocals prominently as well.

Many of Prince's songs he put on albums he worked on for years. The guy lives in the studio so songs on the album were probably 5, 10, 20 years in the making, some of them.

The concept of him using such old songs is interesting to me considering how "in the present" he has portrayed himself to be. I would think that he could churn out 6 songs in the time it takes him to add overdubs to "The Dance" or "Feel Better".

It's a known fact he has pulled old songs from the vault and released them on a new album. We've provided plenty of examples. Shut the fuck up.

lol You may be correct Spinlight but what's worse than Prince borrowing old songs are delusional Prince fanatics who borrow Prince's persona to try to get attention. Talk about defamatory. Crazy lunatics.

Maybe Prince feels like some of these songs were a little before their time. So it was best to let them simmer a bit in the vault until the timing was right.

Who ever said Prince has lost it - has lost it. The Kid's still got game!
