Small blurb about Controversy:

Months before the release of Prince's most underrated album, a lucky few had their gonads rerouted by Dirty Mind. Which might explain why Controversy is still regularly shrugged off as a mere rehash of its predecessor, thus ignoring what a Devoluted little new-wave funk record it is- from the landmark title track to the wacky protest toss-off "Annie Christian," his eccentricity would never again seem so effortless.

(I'm honoring Controversy now as I type this, released the year I was born!)

#1 Essential Electro Funk album

- well, they did get the part right about it being underrated and placing it as #1. I think 1999 is too obvious a choice, but I do believe it is better.

The operative word is "funk"....I don't think anyone would ever say Controversy is a better/ more ambitious album than 1999....But the"funk" is stronger on Controversy than it is on 1999...Excluding "DMSR" and "Lady Cab Driver" and All The Critics," 1999 is essentially a rock-pop release...And yeah, it's a brilliant one...

But I see Spin's vision....

Yeah people are finally getting it, that album is truly funky, look at the tracks Controversy, Private Joy, Lets Work (It does make u climb the walls) and Jack u Off, this is a funky album and then you have the excellence of Do Me Baby and Sexuality. It was a wise decision.

The only problem is that you cannot exclude the songs you mentioned. 1999 is not a straight up rock-pop release. Hell, "DMSR" alone is one of the funkiest songs of all time.

I have Zapp II (and all of Zapp and Roger's albums), and I have the Cameo album, as well as a bunch of other Cameo albums.

Essential listening. I need to check out that Bigg Robb record - he's a member/associate of Zapp also.

IMHO, Zapp II and Cameo's She Strange should be #1 and #2. 1999 was Prince's best as far as electro funk goes though Controversy had some great electro funk moments ("Controversy" being the obvious choice).

Don't get me wrong though, Controversy is a smash album.

Both controversy and 1999 would fit on this list... together for me these two albums sum up the minneapolis sound.

every time there's a list they put these stupid buttons on the end of the paragraph. "He would never again do this that and the other". How glib. It always sounds so authoritative, you almost believe it, but 99% of it is just bullshit written for effect.

And i'm pretty sure his eccentricties' maintained their effortlessness, whatever the hell that means. nice try though.

Yeah, I completely agree. I don't think it takes any effort for him to be eccentric. This statement could even be used with 20TEN and make sense.

It's not about excluding songs....It's about the underlining focus of 1999...It was meant to be Prince's crossover record and it worked.....Bottom line....Controversy is easily more funkier than 1999....Although I enjoy 1999 better as a complete album....

It's good to see any props for Controversy. I have always felt it to be highly underrated.

I'd say 1999 and automatic are funky songs....

The Zapp album has some cool sounds on it, but it's really repetitive and gets tireing after one listen. Chromeo is pretentious and derivative: fakers of the funk!!! Might as well put Daft Punk up there while you're at it. Controversy deserves to be #1 on this list, but this is a very un-imaginative list.
