I wouldn't have complained one bit if it were flipped and 17 Days was the album track and When Doves Cry was the b-side. When Doves Cry has never been a top 20 song for me, though it has an undeniable groove... Just never moved me like 17 Days does. That beat takes you away with the first crack of the Linn Drum.

have to disagree with you on this spinlight....when doves cry is a stone cold classic and the one track that shows prince's genius and it was the song that made me sit up and realise that this prince guy was something special back in june 1984.....17 days is a great track as well of course....one of the great b sides...

I would trade "Crystal Ball" for "It's Gonna Be A Beautifully Repeptetive Night" any day. Put it at the start of disc two and you got a winner. And both Days of Wild and Interactive could easily have still been on Gold Experience, though I like that album just fine the way it is, too.

Absolutely agree. I could never understand the love for "Beautiful Night"...boring song stretched out to an inexplicable 9 minutes. I'm sure I may have felt different if I was there..

As for the original question, I would have loved "She's Always In My Hair" somewhere on Around The World In A Day. Perhaps in place of "The Ladder" which was always a little too dreary for me.

"She's Always In My Hair" would have made Around the World the greatest sequel to Purple Rain. Instead, Around the World remains the biggest OMG DEPARTURE FROM THEIR STYLE album ever. All I wanted was just one mid-tempo funk rock stomp singalong chorus that picked up where Nicki left off.

The closest thing on there was Temptation, which ended with a great example of why Prince should NOT work in a vacuum.

Yes and yes. I still know people who have only heard the edit of La La La He He Hee, too. disbelief And a yes to Erotic City, as well. But now I actually like that they aren't on the albums proper.

I agree about She's Always In My Hair.. altho I'm not sure how that would have fit in with the trippy theme of ATWIAD, but it did deserve a proper release somewhere cause the song is boss.

And what's up with u? U no likey Temptation? It's cingeworthy hilarious-ness if I've ever heard it.

"That's not how it works... you have to want her for the right reasons!"

"I do!"

"You don't! Now DIE!"

lol

I think I get over it by refusing to believe that he was serious with that.

Hell the B-Sides on ATWIAD could have replaced many of the songs on the album.

BUT... the sheer levels of productivity Prince and the Revolution displayed 84-88 (Yes I know the Rev departed the show in 86) means that we have the luxury of having this conversation.

I love ATWIAD as it stands. It was a truly inspired piece of fuck you music. AND it has some truly wonderful songs on it. The b-sides, however, are masterpeces in their own right... even Girl - which took some getting used to.

One of the pleasures of being a Prince fan was 'the b-side'... the knowledge you weren't going to get an album track or, oh how I loathe these things... the 'remix'... you were going to get a singularly crafted song of equal quality to that on the a.

All the songs mentioned above only have their 'story' because of the time and location of their release. It was all part of the plan.

But... that was then... this is....

Purple music, from the 1999 era. Such a great song. It would have been a great 12'
