Temptation: Over the top

Back in the day I really liked Temptation, but now I barely listen to it. It is so overwrough with that screaming every two seconds and weird ass God talk near the end. Don't get me wrong, the scream can be a great artistic weapon, but only should be used when it makes artistic sense. He justs goes way too apeshit here. We all know he's lying anyway. The little dude is a poon hound.

Yay or nay on this one? I say slight nay. The guitar is neato, but the damned song never lets you rest one moment. Yikes.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

That's exactly what the song is about so I don't know he could be lying. I like the song. I wouldn't change a thing.

It was over the top to me back then..now is when I appreciate all of it. I dont like the "fake" over the top-ness of later day releases like Three Chains Of Gold.

And that is his calling card anyways all the way back to kitchen sink of Controversy, the Do Me Baby spoken word crazines leading to International Lover plan ride etc etc imo.

I like the song. When I went and edited Tony M. out of the early 90's songs, I also took a minute and edited "Temptation". I took that ending off of it, and it's so much better that way. I love the hard blues sound on it.

... see your "taste" in some of P's music has changed and one would think that as we mature and grow that some of his music may give us that exact same feeling. Interesting enough, I find that I love some of the gems of the past more now then I did back then. My least favorite album was Chaos & Disorder and for a long time I wouldn't even buy it, let alone listen to tracks from it but I felt I needed to complete the album collection, I bought it and I "like" it now. Not love it.
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I like it, but I don't think it really fits this album, especially as a closer. It's a psychedelic electro-pop album and closes with a blues number and a conversation with God.

very weird. Temptation and The Ladder leave me feeling a bit underwhelmed when I listen to this album. It's pretty great throughout, but then kind of peters out with its two most boring tracks to close it.

The Dance Electric? Anyone?

Where do you edit it though? It seems there's no good stopping point. Did you leave on the "You... I want you..." stuff?

Temptation is another "guilty pleasure" of prince songs.
But i honestly believe it was a look into his inner struggle. Prince had always mixed Spirituality amd Sexuality. The end of the song kinda drove this point home. He knew right from wrong, but he just couldnt help himself. In his own weird twisted way, I think he was showing us his search for that missing piece to the puzzle. And that sex and lust wasnt what was missing in his life.
almost 2 decades later, he seems to have finally listened to that voice at the end of Temptation.

I did this too...but its still an over-the-top, self-indulgent mess of a song. I love the rest of the album...but sorry, think this song plain sucks.

If you listen heard, you can hear when the song really ends, and that stupid drum machine loop comes in. I started from that point and did a slow fade out through the synth part before it finally ends and the weird percussion starts. My version is 5:02 total. So you could just go with that.

It doesn't fit the album, ATWIAD.

You get this semi-tame, beatle-esque album, the BAM... the last track makes no sense.

I should have read this thread first falloff

YES, I agree with this.

But I don't like Temptation very much at all. It's just so completely awkward in the album. He could have closed with "She's Always in My Hair" and "hello".
