The Gold Experience is at the bottom. I have never understood why that album is adored so much by fans. I think it is his most over produced album, more than Emancipation. But to each his own. My opinion isn't any more important than yours....except to me I guess.

I think people really dig that era because the music was fresh and sounded new. It really did feel, at the start any way, that the name change thing gave fire to this new music. All the 'welcome 2 the dawn' stuff, one word song titles, streamlined band that many still regard as his best to this day. The 93/94 stuff Come, Undertaker, Gold era tracks were hot.

As for TGE sounding over-produced, IIRC, it was supposed to sound like a 'live' album, i.e. I think in as much as to have that same energy - so I agree, it's kinda overproduced, but the bombastic nature of it is intentional.

There are some choice tracks during that era. And your right, it does seem he was going for that inflated sound. On songs like Endorphinmachine, Billy Jack Bitch, 319 and the sorely missed Interactive it sounds awesome. But on songs
like Gold and I hate U it does damage.

I remember I was really disappointed with the configuration that was released, the omission of Interactive and Days of Wild still seems wrong. He made a good decision of removing Acknowledge me. But P. Control as the lead track! It would have been a better b-side, like Rock n Roll is Alive was.

Nouveau I respect your opinion on Gold as I feel the same way on Sign O the Times. It always amazes me that everyone has it in the top 3. I just could never get into it. When it cam out I liked about half of the album which at the time was unheard of for Prince as every album before I loved just about every track. Even nowadays that album just does not have a good sound to me. It sounds so dated and just doesnt have any kick to it to me. I guess thats what is good about Prince is as good as Gold is to me its not to others. Sign is medeocre to me and its everyones else's masterpiece. I play Gold as regular as any other cd I listen too, probally at least a couple of spins every few months. I can't tell you the last time I played or wanted to play Sign. Interesting list though. I agree though Interactive and Days of Wild should have been on Gold. We March and P control(or Now) could easily go away. I will admit though the song that really continues to sell that is P Control. I can't tell you how many people come in the store and ask for this song. It is my most requested Prince song that people are looking for. Big club hit even still to this day!!

stillwaiting

My list with a few opinions, and comments...

1. Sign "O" The Times...Take Away Beautiful Night and ADD Witness and Old Friends 4 Sale instead...would've been even better

2. Purple Rain

3. 1999

4. Lovesexy

5. Controversy

6. Around The World In A Day

7. Parade

8. Prince

9. Graffiti Bridge...pretty good album when you edit the filler off of it on a cdr

10. Dirty Mind...most overrated album of his career, but the demo rawness, and the fact that Prince was finding his sound...are good cases for those who love this album a little more than I do.

11. Chaos & Disorder...most underrated album. Fans begging for Prince to put his guitar on, and then don't even listen to it when he does. Try to find a used copy that doesn't look SPOTLESS on the back. NOBODY has even LISTENED to this gem.

12. Batman

13. The Gold Experience...the interludes and interruptions hurt...and overproduction hurt...and the stupidity at the end of gold..."Welcome to the Dawn...You've just become an official member of the New Power Generation...your NPG Lunchbox, membership card, and OFFICIAL bumper stickers are coming to you in the mail soon...That was soooooo sad...did Prince think we were kids really thinking we were "official" members????

14. Black Album

15. Love Symbol...with Tony M Edited out, it is a little better.

16. Come

17. The Vault

18. For You

19. Diamonds And Pearls...Jughead is probably one of Prince's weakest career moments. The "Mr Money Minder" speech at the end is god awful...and if you saw them live that year, you got to see Tony M, Kirky J, and Damon D wear Star Trek Next Generation uniforms that they found at a flea market.

I totally agree with this to me gold is far superior to sott in my opinion. Sott is mixed poorly that's what let's it down for me plus a lot of the songs aren't that good but gold has the segues which I took out and its much better.

I don't have Prince and For You. My choice could also be in that order because of the amount of times I've listened to each. But I got OFFS only last year and it is really one of my absolute favourites. Still one or two favourite tracks come from Chaos and Disorder.

Over the years my list has changed a few times, maybe because some albums have aged better, some albums I couldn't lsiten 2 anymore because I overplayed them at the time.

Purple Rain is back on top, after years hanging on on the nr 5 spot

and SOTT beats Lovesexy...after years of being my fav Prince album.

Diamonds&Pearls has been a fav since it's release (Gett Off and Money don't matter...!)

Same with TGE.

1. Purple Rain

2. SOTT

3. Diamonds& Pearls

4. The Gold Experience

5. Lovesexy

6. Around the world in a day

7. Parade

8. Batman

13. The black album

14. Controversy

15. Prince

16. Dirty Mind

17. Come

18. For You

19. Chaos & Disorder

And if it was an album; the b-sides would also be on nr 6!!

I'm not sure if people are trying to start arguments or be unique or something, but why is everybody hating on SOTT.

SOTT is OBVIOUSLY Prince's best album by leaps and bounds. I didn't think anyone even argued that SOTT, 1999, and Purple Rain were the top three (or at least in the top 5). These lists are making me want to leave the org sad

I think it all depends on personal taste Wildboy, I rate SOTT fourth behind Purple Rain, Dirty Mind, and 1999 his best album IMO.
