glastonbury thoughts

Watched the highlights of Glastonbury now and then on the tv, I hope Prince does play it one of these years, his most recent tour would go down well I think.

I didn't see it but my brother told me they were talking with Michael Eavis's daughter and she was saying she's having a few weeks off and then starting booking acts for next year! And she said they were getting closer and closer to getting Prince! So you never know.

I think he would fill the 'oldies' slot that Paul McCartney did nicely. I thought Paul's singing was pretty ropey to be honest but then he is getting on a bit - seems like he had to shout a lot rather than sing. Whereas Prince's voice is fantastic at the moment. I think an appearance at Glasto would blow everybody away and create a lot of new fans.

I saw a bit of the Chemical Brothers - now, I love a lot of the Chemical Brothers stuff, but I hardly see the point of them performing live, might as well just stand there and play the record. They stand behind a desk twiddling knobs but I doubt they actually do very much at all except bring the volume up!

'Take your choice, turntable or a band'

Ermm, I think I'll have a band please.

I thought old Macca was a bit knackard, but it was nice to hear some old classics. Starsailor and Basement Jaxx were my personal faves. The atmosphere looks great, but I don't think I could handle all that rain and trench foot, obviously I would reconsider if Prince were playing, but otherwise it's good old V festival in August for me yayayayay!!

It's note quite like that. Whenever I've been to see the Chemical Brothers I've had a great time. I don't know if it translates aswell to being outside in the open air but they are definetly a must see when they come to town. Take my word for it.

the last time I saw the Bros at a Glastonbury, they ROCKED IT. The lights were insane and the crowd (at least where I was) was totally hyped. I thought it would be weird to see them at Glastonbury, but IMO they totally pulled it off.

ps- I just was reading about the rain and mud and it secretely made me happy, since I was bummed to not make it this year....I guess it was meant to be. After surviving the mud fest in (I believe) 98 (the year with Primal Scream, Blur and Pulp headlining) I don't think I could make it through another mud year....

Oh, the music rocks, that's for sure - and the light shows great - I'm just not sure what all that twiddling of knobs actually does - It's not really performing music, is it? Do they even play a keyboard? I mean, I saw them do 'Hey Boys, Hey Girls' and they certainly didn't have a female singer appear, so they must just bring the volume of that vocal track up - imagine if Prince did that - I won't sing, I'll just bring up this pre-recorded track - there'd be an outcry! DJs are not musicians or performers, at best they are composers. I wouldn't pay to go see Jimmy Saville in concert.

I hear what you're saying, but, well, it's just a different kind of performance. I think there is an art to DJ-ing. Reading the crowd, knowing when to turn up the energy, when to pull back. Having seen Chemical Bros at smaller venues, I had doubts about seeing them at glasto too (in 2001), but endorphin74 is right, it was truly amazing.

It's kinda like going to see a summer blockbuster action flick versus checking out the latest arthouse indie film. Both have their merits, both can be entertaining and a really good time, they're just a different thing, that's all.
