Ok, Whats Yo Fave {FEMALE} Pianists? Let it be jazz, classical or any genre. There're 2 who always come 2 mind personaly:
Aunt Mary Lou Williams Count Basie, Duke Ellington and the rest of the band-leaders were giving her a whole lotta love & respect, not only becoz she's self-taught but becoz she didn't jump on the Teddy Wilson/Art Tatum bandwagon like alot of them pianists at that time did . I don't know if its accurate but I think she's the 1st FEMALE band-leader, if not then 4give me. Miss Hazel Scott I heared that she was discovered by Billie Holiday back in the early 40's who gave her a gig in the Cafe Socioty where the famous 52nd street was in its rise. Anyway, if there's a MOST OVERLOOKED pianist in the world then it gotta be her, you can tell how much of a fan she is to Bud Powell & Thelonious Monk by the way of her use to space & melodic chords. That album is the most recognizable thing you get from her, anything else is obscure to the 10th degree. Honorable mentions: Patrice Rushen Lisa Coleman Aretha Franklin Irene Wilson Nina Simone Whats yours?

Outside of the ones that have already been mentioned, I really like Tania Maria...

tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm Maybe I'm getting mixed up here, isn't Tania Maria the brazillian/jazz vocalist? So this is ANOTHER Tania Maria right?

I was wondering becoz I don't remember her looking so OLD like that picture. Then again, all the pix that I've seen from her are old. I made a thread about her awhile ago, I feel embarrassed that I missed this info about her. Thanx tho!

It's TRUE; she didn't age well at all...I mean, it almost seemed like her face changed in, like, in 7 or 8 years ( I first heard of her around 1981..by 88, she looked like she does now... ... I usually don't care about stuff like that, but in her case, I was really surprised... Patrice is super talented. Showed P what time it was during the recording of his first album. Rickie Lee is cool as well. I'm soft on Lisa, always have been. I see your point. Her photos can run the gamut from this... ...to ...anywhere ...in between. However, the bottom line is that the woman can play her ass off. That's what counts. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
