ok..Im listening to this now. On second thought you've just made my day at work a little more nerve rattling. This album has more of an edge to it than their previous stuff. Robert is doing a Lot of screaming. The melodies havent really changed. Typical Cure record. I think their fans will enjoy it. It doesnt challenge them too much. I'm glad that I got to hear it, but I wont be buying this one. (Looks for Kenna cd..)

Kenna kicks ass....a NEW Kenna CD would kick even MORE ass. confused

I'm interested in hearing the new Cure, but I'm gonna wait till I get it at the wrecka stow. I hear there's a lot of Robert Smith screaming on this one...which is promising to me. I love love LOVE spastic Robert Smith - the whinier and screechier he is, the more I love it ("Throw Your Foot" is my current fave Cure song). So if it's sludgey and "hard" and screechy and spazzed-out at the same time, chances are I'm gonna be loving it.

Got the CD today and i have to say that I am pretty disappointed. It is not even half as good as "Bloodflowers" in my opinion. The songs are recorded live in the studio and simply don´t sound good. The production sucks.
I own almost everything by the Cure and I feel they only repeat themselves with this new CD. Of course it is better than "Wild Mood Swings" but not much.
You better hear this CD in the shop or download it to see I you like it before buying if you don´t want to waste money.

Definitely is a great album-reminds me of Bloodflowers in the production-hard to describe but definitely a little harder by Cure standards. I think this one's gonna be a grower for some people. I listened to it on VH1 and at first I just wasn't getting into it, but if you're in the right mood it can be a breath of fresh air from the music scene lately.

Anxiety-do you have the Join The Dots box yet? You mentioned "Throw Your Foot" so hope so. Ever since I got that a few months ago I've been dying for a new album-some great stuff on there. I wish they would've put "Pirate Ships" on there somewhere though-I still love that song-so relaxing. Spastic Smith though is always a plus!

Also dying to hear the reissues that should be coming soon too I believe-with remastered tracks and bonus disks with the b-sides/rarities for each album-sounds like Robert's digging into the vaults for those! biggrin

Case

Heard it. Sorely unimpressed. The Cure haven't made a good album in years. And they suck live--I saw them on the "Bloodflowers" tour and Robert has NO stage presence. I've seen shoegaze artists who had more life in their act than him!

Yes indeedy-doodles I have Join The Dots, and I'm still happily digesting all the music on it. I've been digging on "Throw Your Foot" ever since I bought my cassette edition of "Staring at the Sea" (an old skool Cure best-of album) that came with a bonus b-sides comp on the second side of the tape....only now I have the luxury of skipping right to that song on CD when I'm in the mood for it! woot!

i have to say I really enjoyed it when I listened to the streaming audio. I'm still waiting for my copy of the CD to arrive in the mail. I ordered the UK version with its 3 extra songs, and i'm very impatient that it hasn't arrived yet!!! I almost bought the US version today, but decided to be patient.

One thing that strikes me is that, apart from the End of the World and Taking Off, there really aren't many potential singles. So in that way, it is similar to Bloodflowers. But the mood is much different overall than Bloodflowers. Bloodflowers had alot of very sedate tracks. The Cure, while having a couple slower songs, I wouldn't call them "sedate" - they have a sorta powerful intensity like the slower tracks on Disintegration.

It's still growing on me... but I think The Cure is another stellar record.

And i can't WAIT to see them live. The Dream tour in support of Bloodflowers was simply incredible... nearly 3 hour sets filled with diverse, unpredictable material... it was amazing. When I saw them they did Sinking (!!!!!), The Drowning Man, Shake dog Shake and other great lesser known songs.

My only regret about the Cure's sets is that they VERY VERY VERY rarely do b-sides. In fact, the last b-side that i think was part of their regular set list was A Japanese Dream on the Kiss Me tour. I might be wrong about that, but i think that was the last one they did on a regular basis.

My best friend has Staring at the Sea on cassette so I know exactly what you mean. The quality on the set is definitely up there too-not sure how many versions we need of "Hello I Love You", but it really is well done. I'm hoping though that the rarer tracks will be accounted for on the reissues. As Robert says, "It's never enough." biggrin

You're right, there aren't many potential singles. Be sure to look for the version of The Cure
with the making of the album 30-minute DVD by the way. Bloodflowers and The Cure really are too very different albums, aren't they? I love that about their work.

Maybe they can grab some younger fans with the new album and get them into the older material-I'm dying to see them live and I'm more jealous than you can imagine that you saw them on The Dream Tour. Hoping to see them this year somehow-but might not be able to. Guess I'll have to settle for the Trilogy DVD if not. More b-sides would be a welcome addition-and I think you're right about "A Japanese Dream", my best friend saw them on that tour and I believe has mentioned that.

For the time being "The Promise" is probably my favorite track, and there seems to be a growing list. Really enjoyed your post JonSnow. Hope your copy comes soon! The quality on the cd itself is much, much better. music

Love it!

I don't really see the comparisons to Bloodflowers at all though.

To me, it's like the more aggressive elements of the Kiss Me album like Fight, Torture and The Kiss.

I really want those 4 extra tracks too.

Just got the new album yesterday. I don't know what people are so disappointed about, and I really don't see how this album is such a huge departure. From what people have been saying, I was expecting an album that sounded like Godflesh, with Robert Smith caterwauling like his arm had just been chopped off by Uma Thurman in a Tokyo blood orgy.

When I threw the sucker in my CD player, though, all I heard was a really good new Cure album. What gives? Maybe I need to listen to it a few more times to be substantially freaked out by how different it is, I don't know. The Cure is one of those bands with a really unique but fairly predictable sound, and whenever I get a new album of theirs, I more or less can figure what I'm in for. In my opinion, this album's no exception - it's Robert and the boys doing what they do best.

Yeah, it's a little sludgier and a little more aggro than, say, Bloodflowers. I like the energy of it. In my opinion, this album is anything but a disappointment.

Monkey Reviews are my favorite.

All of the Cure stuff is dark/depressing that's what makes them so damn good.

Well thats exactly the problem that i have with this album. The music and the lyrics sound like i have heard them a thousant times before from them just worse. From beginning to end every song is spoilt by too much singing. There are almost no longer instrumental parts on it and therefore they fail to develope some kind of atmosphere.
The best Track "Going Nowhere" is just a rip-off from "Pictures of you". They even use EXACTLY the same chime sound at the beginning as if they didn´t have a better idea.
In their Interviews they were raving about how their new producer brought out the best in them and how many takes of each track they had to record to satisfy him. But I simply don´t hear that on the record. The songs sound underdeveloped compared with their better albums like Pornography, Disintegration, Bloodflowers etc.

I kinda like Us or them, The promise and Going nowhere but thats it.
