I'm listening to this song now, and I'm amazed at how much the keyboards sound like "1999". The Princely influence is definitely alive and kicking in this song. I guess you can't work with Prince for long before some of his purple influence wears off on ya.

I hate to say this, but I think I actually like the late, great Robert Palmer's version of this song a little better. Of course, he sings it much lower than Cherrelle, and the musical arrangement is MUCH different (more guitars and less keyboards) but his cover version kicks ass. Anybody agree with me on this?

Now i agree I Didnt Mean 2 Turn U On did kinda rip off the melody of 1999. But MAN that beat and OH MY GOD...i dont know what else 2 say. It is one of my favorite songs of all time.

This is going to sound funny, but I tend to like the first version I hear of a song, whether it is the original or the cover version. I find that I don't like other versions of the same song, only the one that I heard first. Call me crazy, but that's how I've always been. I don't even like it when Prince does cover versions.

I love Robert Palmer - from his very first record, the funky "Sneakin Sally Thru the Alley" to the Power Station thru until he just totally gave up and started doing lounge-lizard music.

But that tune - "Didn't mean to turn you on" - it was so weak. I never even heard the original, but this thing just sounds like they programmed the song on a computer in about 5 minutes and called it a day.

I'm in total agreement with you. The first version of a song I hear tends to become the template no matter who does it and that's the way it's supposed to sound from that moment on. This becomes a bit embarrassing when I hear odd covers before the originals (like Aerosmith's "Come Together"), but that's how I am. One exception where I liked the second version of a song much better was Sinead's "Nothing Compares 2 U". When I first heard her version, I couldn't believe someone actually made that crappy song sound good.
