I saw the Beasties on mtv yesterday for a few moments.I thought that it's sad that they look older. It's gonna be sad when they don't record anymore. Music needs them!!They are respectful of the past, embrace some new,are open minded with music, are fun,and clever.

Why replicate when you innovate?

finally got some spare time to listen to the album, and yeah, it's good! after just 2 spins I won't rate it yet or compare it to their previous work. but hey, innovative??? I mean you can't go more retro than this in 2004, can you? the rap style itself (straight out the mid 80ees), the samples (incl. Chic/SugarHillGang!) and name me just one other current HipHop record incorporating classic SCRATCHING!

geee, but I'm not complaining here, I AM far more into old school anyway. so it's a nostalgic yet very refreshing album thumbs up!
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

Well, compared to most of the bilge coming out today ...

What? oh hell no it ain't classic.

Now that I've heard it a few times, I would rate it about 3.5 stars out of 5.

5 stars =Paul's Boutique
4 stars =Hello Nasty

It's a above-average album (as usual for them), but about par for Beasties.

check your head is an excellent album.

here's how i would rate their albums:

1) Paul's Boutique ****1/2
2) Hello Nasty ****1/2
3) Ill Communication ****
4) Check Your Head ****
5) To the 5 Boroughs ***
6) License to Ill ***

And The Sounds Of Science compilation, which isn't really a proper album, I give ****.

Actually, even though I snapped at you for not giving Paul's Boutique 5 stars, the relative ratings/opinions are about the same from my perspective.

The boys are #1 on the charts. They had basic promotion, no CD's with ticket sales, and they still beat Prince. Why? Because they stuck to a formula that works. Their first single is catchy and fun, unlike Musicology.

And these guys aren't really in their 40's yet. Ad Rock is 37, Mike D is 38, and MCA is about to turn 40.

I think they should have used a picture of all 5 boroughs, instead of just Manhattan. A NYC subway map would have been better than the cover they used.

First half of the album, music and lyrics suck.

By the time "Hey Fuck You" hits, the music is improving. Lyrics still suck.

The last 4 or so songs, the music is great. Lyrics still suck.

neutral I can't believe Rolling Stone gave it 5 stars! (I wouldn't call it a "must-buy", izak.)

What would have rounded this album out and make it as good as the others would be some groovy laid back LIVE BAND instrumentals like the ones on Check Your Head and Ill Communication. I think their band work is really underrated. As it stands, there isn't enough breaking up of the same kind of Pro Tools beats which permeate the album....it gets quite samey and I've found myself going back to certain tracks just so I can try to remember the hook (if there is one) and differentiate them from the others.

Oh, amen to that. I STILL love "Sabrosa" for example. I've heard enough of this new one (online mostly) that I end up just going back to the Beastie albums I already have. Somehow it's just not the same energy. With Ill Communication especially, to me it seemed the creative juices were really flowing, the vibe was definitely there up to and including Hello Nasty, and then seemed to just drop out.

Always better to make a Beastie mix cd of favorites than spend money on something you might give a few spins to and then it goes off to the dusty shelf.

Oh, but nothing beats a good Traffic, er, Spencer Davis Group cd. Ok, I had to. lol

The second half of this cd is growing on me more and more. I do agree, however, thatit's missing the "band" music that I love.I want more instrumentals.

Um....Usher has TONS AND TONS OF PROMOTION and Usher is not on #1 but i dont hear u saying nopting about him. Just cuz something goes #1 doesnt mean it will be there tomorrow..or the next..or the next....

I dont have nothing against Beasties..the last album i bought was "Pauls Boutiqe" which was a cool album...but come on man, Musicology has been there for WEEKS and so has Usher and other people on there 2. That's not justifying the music at all, that's unfair.
