I haven't been following them for years but I saw them open for The Stooges and it was they were pretty darn good. I would check out this album and possibly the DVD.

the DVD is definitely going to be a treat - it looks like they're including the "Goo" video album in its entirety, plus a bunch of other videos...i bought the "goo" video album the first time around, and it's a treat and a half - kim gordon is at her sexiest and campiest in all the videos, and in general, sonic youth always has the best directors for their clips - gus van sant, harmony korine, spike jonze, etc.

and anyway, thurston moore is such a guitar god, that's reason enough right there.

i just got my CD and DVD at the beast buy...9.99 for the album, 13.99 for the DVD...CHEEP!!!

and woo hoo, the DVD comes with a sticker!

Had a listen to the CD and a first peek at the DVD...I've given "Sonic Nurse" a couple of spins so far today and I'm loving it. It's not as meandering or bland as I think some of their stuff has been...I'm not a huge fan of "NYC Ghosts & Flowers" or "Murray Street", though I do think "Murray Street" makes for some good headphone listening - the new SY is more like "Dirty" or "Experimental Jet Set", only, hmm....it sounds like they care about making good pop/rock music again, only they don't care to prove anything enough to throw in a mess of flash and pomp (though "Goo" is still one of my favorite messy, flashy, pompfests)...the new album is just really good guitar-based rock music with a sound familiar enough to please fans and songs accessible enough to maybe hook a new fan or two. I'll be listening to this on those nasty lazy summer days when I wanna lay in bed and read but all I can manage to do is drink beer and nap. That wasn't a really appetizing thing to say, was it?

MEANWHILE, the DVD is AMAZING. All their videos, from 1990-2004, with guest appearances by everyone from Kathleen Hanna to Sleater-Kinney to Kim Deal to McCauley Culkin, with videos directed by Spike Jonez, Harmony Korine, Richard Kern and a who's who of art-flick hipsters. Almost all of the videos have band commentaries. Some have band commentaries AND director commentaries. Tons of extra features. Several little documentaries. Several additional videos that ended up on the cutting room floor. And there's even a function that lets you program what order you wanna watch the videos in. For Sonic Youth fans, it's DAYS O' FUN.

I'm so excited with all this SY stuff that I completely forgot to buy the PJ Harvey album.

guess I'll have to see them again on august 30th at the amsterdam Paradiso.....

It's an OK disc but nothing to shout about. Not nearly as good as "Dirty" (God, this album DEFINED my sophomore year in high-school) or "Goo."

Nothin' they do is ever gonna be like those albums. I think they were experimenting with applying their style toward making standard pop songs, and I also think they were going through a very playful, kitschy, pop art phase at the time...I think they've moved on and matured since those albums (especially on stuff like "A Thousand Leaves" and some of the stuff on their indie label), but I really do think "Sonic Nurse" is, at least in part, a return to their more "poppy" sound, however subtle it may be.
