The only real cock rock I have in my music collection is some Motorhead, and while I love me some Lemmy, "Ace of Spades" can only take me so far after a while.

Now, I'm not looking to grow a mullet and turn into a full-on metalhead or anything, but a few best-ofs would hit the spot. I've looked at the local wrecka stows over the few days and there are so many anthology comps for these three bands, I don't know which is good or which is crap. I'm severely tempted to get the big ol' Sabbath box set that just came out, cuz I have a feeling I'd like all their old stuff, but I'm stumbling around in the dark here, for the most part.

I know there are some purple metalheads on here...help a fella out with some suggestions, why don'tcha?

i used to be into metal when i was a kid...iron maiden "number of the beast" is pretty classic iron maiden. judas priest's "british steel" (i think that was the title) was also one of my regular spins. i never had much black sabbath. i think my brother had a best of or something with about 8 or 9 tracks. i don't remember the title but i think the cover was all black. don't know if any of that helps ya out.

There is a great compilation from '83 called Metal For Breakfast (Attic Records). I used to listen to this on my way to my Catholic high school pulling bong hits in the back of my friends Camaro. I am not sure it is still in print, but you can find it on the internet.

Also, Metal Blade Records has an entire series of good compilations called Metal Massacre (I think there is even a Best Of Metal Masacre). Any of these will satisfy for your needs...particularly if you are into the NWoBHM sound. This series is in print.

You mentioned the Black Sabbath box set, but did you know that Judas Priest just put out a 4 disc set that also includes a DVD of a 'Screaming For Vengeance' concert.
Now, if you're just looking to re-live the old days, then you'll probably just have to buy some random CDs by the greats (those 80s metal albums usually didn't have any filler, so you can't go wrong), but if you're looking for something new to give you that feeling then the closest you're probably gonna get is the Nikki Sixx/Tracey Guns side band 'Brides Of Destruction' & the upcoming (only a week & a half away) 'Velvet Revolver'. Rock on!
