I don't think it's a fair comparison...but I'm gonna go with Maggot Brain.

it's hard 2 compare them 'cause both songs are staples of their respective eras and artists....but i wouldn't be suprised if Prince was inspired by maggot brain when he wrote the music 4 purple rain....

I can't even compare the two, as they are completely different.
Gotta go with Maggot Brain though. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

I know, not a fair contest . Actually, I just picked those two because they're both based on four chord progressions on guitar, the first three descending , the fourth rising('course, Maggot Brain is in 3/4, Purple Rain 4/4 --big difference) " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

If I'm on strong hallucinogens I might say Maggot Brain. The live version on One Nation is even better, I think, than the album version beacuse of the band's performance. But as a song I'd have to go with Purple Rain. I'm not sure maggot brain really is a song, other than the chords you mentioned. Is it a melody, or was it just an improvised solo? I know if they play it now they play it the same, but I don't think the solo was written. I'm also not sure Maggot Brain is an anthem. When I think of an anthem, I think of the audience singing along, fists pumped, like We Will Rock You, Hey Jude, Purple Rain, or Just about any Who song. I wouldn't want to hear the audience singing maggot brain. Check this song out at:

Too different to even compare. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.

These songs are SO different in what they do. As an anthem, I'd have to go with Purple Rain. As a guitar player's "anthem" - Maggot Brain HANDS DOWN. All you have aside from the breif spoken words at the beginning is music to take you there...and it does. The guitar solo in Purple Rain is nice, but nowhere close to the magnitude of MB. Also, you have lyrics to focus on in PR, which is sort of what anthems are all about. There's no funk in PR, also. Its an R&B/rock ballad. Different animals altogether. I favor the live version of MB over PR, personally. Still, I like PR too - I just never want to hear it played again. Its been worn out to me. I don't think I could ever get tired of MB.
