Artists who reflect genius like Prince

What artists do you feel have a lot of career parallels with Prince? I don't mean some "Bilal is riding his jock" or "D'Angelo wishes he could make TRC" bullshit.

  • Bob Dylan

  • David Bowie

  • Trent Reznor

All three of these artists, in my opinion, reflect not only the same sort of musical genius as Prince, but also an uncanny ability to change their style...to grow and adapt. In Dylan's case, there is also the similarity of having a "religious phase" that alienates a lot of fans. What do all you MFs think?

Tori Amos is an amazing artist - brilliant songwriter, musician, performer... and acquiring a catalog of work that is impressive.

David Bowie... a true visionary. everything he does is amazing and original, and he can do ANYTHING.

I don't think anyone has a genius like Prince, absolutely no way! But since I'm a hip hopper and a young Prince fan, I'd say I like the originals in the industry like Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Outkast, L.L Cool J, Biggie Smalls, Q-tip, Neptunes rule with beats, and ofcourse let us not forget the legend Bob Marely whose also in a class by himself. I think him, Prince, and Lauren are up way up there on my list!!!!!

I cannot believe that no one has mentioned Stevie yet. Stevie Wonder is probably the only other pure musical genius on Prince's level that I can think of in terms of playing, arrainging and singing.

Aside from writing amazing lyrics, Brandon Boyd and Jose Pasillas are truly talented artists.

Example of artwork by Brandon:

Can't believe that no-one has mentioned Tricky yet - guess he hasn't made it too far out of the UK, but he is an amazing artist. May not be as musically gifted as Prince, but he has the same spirit in his music - mixing up what has been done before, and not afraid to produce lyrics and arrangements that give a big 'fuck you!' to the mainstream.

And I agree with Beck - midnite vultures was excellent, and 'Debra' is one of the best Prince rip-offs I've heard - Adore with a sense of humour!

forgot one -

Bruce Springsteen almost wrecked his (commercial) career through wrestling with a record company. we all know P nevber lost his genius, but maybe he can get his focus and commercial appeal (those court-side seats cost money u know!) back.

For me, the only artist who reflects genius as Prince is of course David Bowie .

Every album he recorded from "The Man Who Sold The World" to "Scary Monsters" are true masterpieces .

He can do anything, but like Prince, in a very personnal way :
Folk : "Space Oddity"
Heavy rock/blues : "The Man Who Sold The World"
Shiny Pop tunes : "Hunky Dory"
Glam Rock/jazzy cabaret songs : "Ziggy Stardust" and "Aladdin Sane"
Soul/funk : "Diamond dogs","Young Americans" and "Station To Station"
Experimental rock/atmospheric instrumentals : "Low", "Heroes" and "Lodger"
Indus/new wave : "Scary Monsters"

After a few disappointing albums in the 80's, He came back in 1993 with the brilliant "Black Tie White Noise" .
Then followed the prodigious "Outside" ( My favourite album of all time, I like it even better than "Sign'o'The Times" ), "Earthling" and "Hours" .

His 95 and 97 tours were unforgettable .

I saw him four times in Paris ( Zenith 95, Bercy 96, Le Parc Des Prince 97 and L'Elysée Montmartre 99) .

Like Prince, he produced a lot of great artists : Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Mott The Hoople ... and influenced people like Trent Reznor, who recorded the very Black Tie White Noise/Outside-like "The Fragile" with two former Bowie musicians ( Adrian Belew and Mike Garson, this last one still play with Bowie ) after the NIN/Bowie us tour in 95 .

I eagerly await his new lp .

In no particular order:

* Stevie Wonder

* Sting

* David Bowie

* Juan Gabriel

* John Lennon

* Carlos Santana

* Aretha Franklin

* Michael Jackson

* Madonna

* Bob Dylan

* Carole King

All the above have written, produced and performed their own shit at one time or another...just as Prince does. I feel 2 truly gain "genius" level...u must take that in2 consideration...plus have the "genius" 2 stay in the game, change with the times, and still maintain ur diversity.
