(F**k It) I Don't Want You Back

26 expletives and it's No. 1
By Daniel Brettig
April 24, 2004

IT seems a lot of swearing can still go a long way.
Bitter hip-hop track F... It (I Don't Want You Back) has been the biggest
pop single in Australia, possibly the world, this year.

It has topped the Australian charts for three consecutive weeks.

It also sat at number one for seven weeks in the United States. Last week,
it debuted at number one in Britain.

With expletives, including the F-word uttered a blush-inducing 20 times
during the course of the song, it blends its invective with the feel of a
radio-friendly urban ballad.

Triple M Adelaide's Music Director Jaime Chaux said the single's bulging
sales were mainly due to the novelty of its vengeful lyrics.

"I don't think there's ever been anything that's ever been that blunt," he
said. "Over the years songs about love gone wrong, like REM's The One I
Love, have always left a little room for interpretation but there's none of
that here.

"When we got the single at the station and heard it for the first time we
all said 'my God, this is going to be huge', because of that novelty value."

F... It's New York-based creator Eamon Doyle said the blunt bitterness of
the track, a rebuke to a two-timing lover, had also been a factor.

"It's a truthful song," the 20-year-old told The Advertiser. "It's something
that everyone wants to say but no one has had the balls to say it, certainly
not vocally in music."

The impact of the song has not been affected by the heavy edits applied to
radio versions, with cursing either cut completely (the ultra-clean version)
or partly (the clean version).

"People know what the song says but, on radio you've got to keep it clean
for the kids," said Doyle.

"Apparently in Sweden they're playing the version with the cursing in it,
which is great."

While F... It's novelty is unquestioned, few pundits have given Doyle much
chance of being anymore than a flash in the commercial pan.

"He has to be very careful about his next single, otherwise he'll be another
Young MC, another Vanilla Ice, or more recently The Androids," Chaux said.

"There's only so much novelty people can take."

Naturally, Doyle disagreed.

"I want to last like Frank Sinatra did," he said.

"A long time."

BTW, it only peaked at No. 16 in the US (which is too high as it is, but where they got this "no. 1 for seven weeks" shit I do not know).

Crazy song that I couldn't believe something like that could be played on the radio. There's a late nite DJ on my favorite R&B station who LOVES this song. He always seems to be playing it on my drive time home at nite neutral

I don't think it's the record company claiming it - it's the dumbass author of the article, who can't be bothered to check facts. lol

They are pretty bad too. Reporters should not write stories about artists and their albums if they can never get the facts straight. It's either over or under embleshing or mixing up years and names and titles. They suck!

Although he sounds like the Y2K version of Keith Sweat, I'm kinda glad he made the record. I wonder how many "diss reply" records are going to come out from this song? I think he addressed an issue that DOES exist and feelings that are valid. Women write songs to no end about how men do them wrong, but as soon as a man does a heartbreak song with lyrics on how he really feels, then its treated like a crime. Pop culture dehumanizes men almost as much as it objectifies women. Dude wrote a song about how he felt and his anger at the moment and didn't sugarcoat it. It needed to be done, especially in the context that it was done in. It would have been almost completely ineffective if it had been a rap song. Fact is - women cheat, too despite pop culture's reluctance to acknowledge it. The lyrics are a little immature (except the last verse), but convey the idea effectively. Men are used to male-bashing songs. Its about time there was a dose dished out here and there. I think the reason so many women are offended by it is because they may harbor some guilt from when they have screwed a guy or two over and the song addresses it - sugar free. As for the singing - I HATE Keith Sweat and nasal vocals coming from male singers. It sucks.

I have 2 agree!. That song has 2 b 1 of the worst UK Number 1 ever, and remember in the UK we have some really bad number 1's but that is amongst the top 5 worst ever.

Eminem and Bubba Sparxx r million times better than this guy.
