Courtney Love - "America's Sweetheart"

I'm late as usual buying stuff blackeye but I really liked the last Hole album & had been meaning to pick this one up. I like it - the roughness of her voice is great, it's good to let out a scream from the pit of your belly every now & again, ya know? biggrin

I hate that all this stuff is happening w/ her now, makes me wonder if anyone paid attention to this album when it dropped (I didn't hear much about it). But it seems to have gotten good reviews (I didn't read them but she's got a bunch posted on her website).

Anyway, I dig it. My favorite by far is the last track, "Never Gonna Be the Same" - great melody, pure guts on record. The lyrics are really interesting too, check them out.

*the lyrics are one way on record, another in the liner notes & yet another online! trippy, but I followed the liner notes unless it was clearly different*

*****
NEVER GONNA BE THE SAME

Cut me up today
Should've stood in your way
You lied

And everywhere a dream
Nothing came between
I died

Cut me away
I will not be for you
God comes down
Never gonna be the same
Never gonna be the same
Never gonna be the same

And if you wanted water
And if you wanted food
If you want shelter
I can not come over to you

And if you want love now
Or a needle and a spoon
You gotta show a little faith in me now baby i can't come over to you
It's never gonna be the same
Never gonna be the same
God come on down

And if you want my heart out
Sitting by the bay
Well the sun went down tomorrow, it will not come up today

And if you want love now
Wrapped your arms so cruel
If there's a God it's me now baby, I cannot come over to you
Never gonna be the same
Just put me in your way
She lied

Gotta show a little faith
In your old rugged cross you made
What goes up must come down and down and down and down
You cried

And if I wanted fame now
Or the glory of the womb
And if I wanted my name in places, I'll never lie to you

And if i wanted Christ
Or a Messiah by my side
I can't believe in anything, I know that Mary lied

I sent you up today
Could've got in your way
Oh, Mary lied

Do you know
Can you feel it?
Do you feel me?
Yeah

And if you wanted madness
If you want what's pure
Well you gotta come over to me baby, my light doesn't reach to you

And if you want a love
So unconditional and real
You gotta ride that black horse baby through the depths of hell that I've been

Follow me away
Yea though I walk

I will be the same
The strongest one that's made
Through the valley of life
Never gonna be the same
Goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight
You'll never be the same

*****

I know some of you are digging it too - I was reminded to buy it when I saw it on your top 5 album lists razz Come on, show your love for Courtney - she needs it smile

Okay, let me get all the obligatory Courtney shit out of the way:

WHAT A NASTY WOMAN/SHE'S A WHORE/OH, HER POOR DAUGHTER/SHE'S A JUNKIE/SHE KILLED KURT/SHE'S BUILDING A DEATH STAR/SHE KNIFED LASSIE/HER PANTIES HAVE SKIDMARKS/ETC.

Okay. I think that pretty much gets it all out of the way....

...that said, I LOVE THIS ALBUM. "Life Despite God" is my favorite, it sounds like she sang it hunched over a toilet. Sometimes I think it's unintentionally campy, sometimes I think it's spot-on brilliant, but I think it's a loud, fun obnoxious way to make 40 or so minutes go by really fast and that's always cool by me.

I love the title track to "Celebrity Skin" to BITS! The only other song by them I'm familiar with is "Doll Parts" from Live Through This.

Yea, I wasn't too into Live Through This either, though I love both "Violet" & "Doll Parts"...

BUT there's a bunch of great songs on the Celebrity Skin album Nova - if you like the title track you'd probably dig much of the album (particularly "Reasons To Be Beautiful", "Dying", Use Once & Destroy", "Northern Star" & "Playing Your Song"). There's only 2 songs on the whole thing that I skip & that's saying a LOT lol Check it out biggrin

"This one's for the gallbladder," Courtney Love says as she slams an acupuncture needle into my leg.

I haven't the album yet, but "Mono" has grown on me and I really like "Hold On To Me."

Celebrity Skin is a good album. My favorite songs being "Malibu" and "He Hit So Hard."

All of Courtney's antics aside, I've really enjoyed most of her albums. Live Through This was fantastically grungy, Celebrity Skin was a damn near flawless rock record, and America's Sweetheart is a blast.

Sure, she's a train wreck, but at least it gets MJ and Whitney out of the news for a while.

WOW, that article is nuts lol I know there's a childs life at stake here (and possibly Kurt Cobain's was too) & I'm not denying the woman has problems that run DEEP & are gonna fuck up her child. But I can't deny the music - maybe that her pain & rage & confusion & guts get sprawled out w/ each effort one way or another. That's no excuse, I just can't deny that I like her stuff.

It's funny - I hate Woody Allen b/c the SoonYee (sp?) thing sickens me still... I rarely listen to R. Kelly now b/c everytime he's singing about a woman I'm picturing some naive 13 year old girl & I just wanna punch him out... MJ has been tainted for me even before the alligations & baby dangling, but those put the thick icing on the ghetto cake... All of these people willfully engage in behavior that harms an innocent child (though SoonYee is an adult now ) but somehow I don't hold it against Courtney enough to put the cd down. I dunno, it ain't b/c she's a woman. I can't explain it, but I admire her guts. She's a wild bitch - I dig it...

Thanks for posting this Calhoun! I saw Courtney on the Leno show and i really wasn't diggin the song she performed at all. I'm not even sure what the name of it was but it just sounded shitty. So I was a little disappointed and hesitant on buying the album...but now I'm gonna check it out anyway.

I can't help but love Courtney Love, no matter how much of a cunt she can be!

That performance was HORRIBLE. You really shouldn't base the album on her performance on Leno, she really didn't do it justice.

It was so bad that I really thought the album was gonna suck too! And normally I DON'T go by live performances but this time...it was just BAD!

I'll pick it up this weekend.

I bought this album yesterday and so far it really kind of sucks.

I think the first two tracks are OKAY...but she's just not convincing me that she's got any good songs left in her.

NO WAY, I'm serious...I always liked Courtney, but I'm finding this latest effort a little hard to like so far....it might grow on me though.

CBS re-aired her Letterman spot tonight. And, I still just don't get it. I just see a burnt-out, horribly singing woman.

I know, I'm with you....she HAS talent, she's written some good stuff, but I think she's just too into being burnt out than making good songs anymore.

She's currently settled into a downward spiral of substance abuse. I hope she gets some help, cuz she ain't helping her daughter one bit.

I think I'll have to revise that. She's quickly descending into the C-list, a place reserved for Hulk Hogan and other "notables".
