Here We Are Now, Entertain Us: An Observation By Odyssey Miles I've got something to say. I'm not singling anyone out, this is just an observation.
I've noticed than many people here on the Org consider themselves music critics. I'm no expert, but I at least have enough respect for my fellow musicians to be constructive. Can't we do better than to simply say that an artist's work is "crap" or that it "sucks" without offering a reason? Really, a lot of people crack me up when they criticize Prince for not being able to write a "proper" song with a verse and a chorus. First of all, music is art. There is no "proper" way. Get with it, honestly. This is pitiful. A "verse, chorus, verse" arrangement is just a drop in the bucket of the musical spectrum!! Open your mind and realize that there is more to music than the typical pop song. Honestly, have some respect for yourself and the artist who was generous enough to share a musical expression. I appreciate hearing someone actually describe a song or the vibe of an album whether they like it or not. At least they put forth the effort to describe what they like or dislike rather than summing it up with I'm gonna use it as a coaster". It may be fun to bash something that you don't like, but you really sound foolish when you don't offer anything constructive. It doesn't matter if it's 'Musicology', 'Damita Jo', or a Muppets record. If you think that an artist could have done something differently, speak up and expound on that. If you think you can do better, then by all means get off your a$$ and make a record of your own. If you can't do either of those, well then perhaps you just shut your frickin' piehole. Sincerely, Odyssey

I feel sorry for all the kids who came of age in the last 15 years or so, but especially for the kids who think rock and roll is what grunge bands play.
Rock music should be about: (a) having fun; (b) getting laid; or (c) having fun while getting laid. Grunge and all its successors seem to be about how horrible life is. Ugh.

I love to find fault in the works of others. Maybe it's because I am trying to build myself up by tearing someone else down, I don't know. But I always try to have a reason for disliking something. So I guess I agree with what you are saying. If you are going to critique something have something more to say than "this sucks".
