San Francisco Chronicle Review of Damita Jo

"If there's another review about Janet Jackson that uses the following words, everyone is just going to start puking and punching themselves in the face: breast, Super Bowl, nipple ring, Justin Timberlake, horse tranquilizers. Yeah, great. She flashed flesh on TV. Big deal. Doesn't anyone remember Lil' Kim at the Grammy Awards five years ago? What about Grace Jones in "A View to a Kill"? She didn't wear a top during that whole movie. And imagine her in the blizzard of cocaine and bisexuals at Studio 54. Get over it, folks. Women have breasts. Sometimes they pop out during the Super Bowl. That's just how it goes. Oh, by the way, Jackson has an amazing album coming out this week. That's what we should be talking about. The best song on "Damita Jo" is called "All Nite," where Jackson whispers, "This is sick," just before a crazy Chic rhythm kicks in and the whole thing just blows up into the best dance song since "Bizarre Love Triangle." But it gets better. "SloLove" was practically written for water-skiing in the summer. And what about the part where she moans, "You know how to make my rain come down," in the ballad "Moist"? It's seriously better than Wham's "Careless Whisper." There are a lot of great songs here. Even the cascading "I Want You." It's one of those records everyone is going to love: Jon Bon Jovi, Dracula, even Peter, Paul and Mary. Well, maybe not Paul. It's smart, funky, bright, lollipop delicious, cutting- edge R&B delivered by master-class producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Babyface. And by posing just like Sade on the cover, Jackson makes it OK to throw away every other album you own."

Janet still knows how to attact her gay fan base! wink

This guy is somewhat tooo positive, but "All Nite" really is a great track! I would say of "Slave 4 U" greatness.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but "Slave 4 U" does not even compare to "All Nite".

I think a lot of people that even hate Britney and "everything she stands for" really dig "Slave" so I don't think that was scaracism. I'm so excited about hearing the full song now!

Velvet, where are you buying the CD? I just checked the Best Buy website and it looks like they might be giving away a poster with the CD but it could just a picture of Janet (the cover of JALW) next to the CD. Do you know if anyone is giving away anything with the CD becuase that's where I'll go.

And the review is a bit off since Lil' Kim wore the famous pasty outfit on the MTV awards, not that I'm defending people that are trying to fine Janet millions for her SuperBoob!

Tower Records and a few other stores will give you a free Damita Jo backpack if you preorder it from them. I preordered one from Tower to get the bag, and I'll get it in the mail, but I'm just going to pick up the CD at a record store up the street from my house as soon as it opens on Tuesday, since I don't know when the one I preordered will be in. I usually wind up buying a few copies of anything Janet, anyway! wink

Hard to tell. AFY sold 600+k on the heels of massive 1st single, something this album does not have. Either way, Damita Jo will end up being a disappointment saleswise for Janet.

How can they have stats like that out before the album even comes out? I could care less. All I know is that I'm buying at least one copy.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Janet Jackson (news) may have ignited a furor by baring a breast during a live CBS telecast of the Super Bowl, but the pop diva literally faces the music next week when her new album, "Damita Jo," hits stores.

AP Photo
Slideshow: Janet Jackson Controversy

While Jackson's ardent fans will likely judge the album on its merits, it may be difficult to completely tune out the controversy over her notorious half-time performance.

Indeed, the cover of "Damita Jo" -- she says the title comes from her middle name -- features Jackson in profile clad only in jeans with her arms covering her breasts.

"Being an artist, she's very comfortable expressing herself creatively," her publicist, Stephen Huvane, told Reuters on Friday. "Janet's trying to stay focused on releasing the best record she can and by not obsessing on the controversy and the hoopla."

After keeping a low profile in the wake of her infamous "wardrobe malfunction," Jackson steps earnestly back into the limelight next week to promote the new Virgin Records album, which arrives in U.S. stores March 30 and overseas March 29.

She will return to CBS, owned by Viacom Inc., on March 29 on the "Late Show with David Letterman" for her first network interview since the Feb. 1 Super Bowl show.

Jackson also will give her first televised musical performance since the game on ABC's "Good Morning America" next week and will host NBC's "Saturday Night Live" next month. ABC is owned by the Walt Disney Co. and NBC by General Electric Co.

Although Jackson issued a mea culpa for a "costume reveal" that she said went further than intended, CBS effectively barred her from the Grammy Awards a week later when she refused the network's demands to make an on-air apology.

Public outrage surrounding her flash of nudity also sparked a Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites) probe, congressional action to stiffen fines for broadcast indecency and an industry-wide crackdown on sexually explicit material on TV and radio.

FANS DON'T CARE

Nevertheless, the judgment of music consumers rests on different factors, experts said.

"It (Super Bowl) will never be forgotten, but it will be forgiven. The audience that listens to and loves Janet are going to still buy her records, go to her concerts and watch her TV specials," said Ann Stephenson, chief executive of New Jersey-based image consulting firm Stephenson Group.

The Super Bowl faux pas was "not a career buster," she said, "but it was probably smart to keep a low profile for a while. ... Based on her past performances this could be her best re-coming-out party."

Radio stations started playing one single, "Just A Little While," around the time of the Super Bowl. But after getting an initial boost, the track's airplay lost momentum, never getting past No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jackson's label, owned by EMI Group Plc (news - web sites), has since released a second single, "I Want You," targeting Jackson's core R&B audience, which has fared better.

Industry watchers expect "Damita Jo" to sell 200,000 copies its first week, about a third of the retail volume logged by her last album, "All For You," in its first week in 2001. That release went on to sell 3 million copies, regarded as a commercial success but far short of earlier works.

"You can't really throw stones at her if she didn't sell as much in 2001 as she did in 1986. It's hard for pop artists to stay relevant. Let's give her credit for still being in the conversation," said Geoff Mayfield, director of sales charts for Billboard magazine.

Some believe the new album will get a huge push when Jackson embarks on a marketing campaign and when a video is released in the United States.

In an interview for April edition of "Upscale" magazine, Jackson said she "pushes the envelope" with her latest album in terms of exploring sexuality as a theme.
