When released soundtracks don't include films' best songs

In Spike Lee's "Malcolm X," the filmmaker once again manages to fit great songs with pivotal scenes in his movie. And, near the film's end -- as Malcolm drives toward what would be his final speaking engagement -- Sam Cooke launches into "Change is Gonna Come." Soul-stirring moment. All of my friends would later remark about the effective use of the song at that scene.

Enthused, I rushed out to buy the soundtrack after seeing the film -- and Cooke's classic wasn't part of the track listing!! I felt cheated! I felt outraged! There was no way I'd buy the CD now!!!

Oleta Adams sang a powerful song in the closing credits of the Dana Carvey flop "Clean Slate" (remember that?) -- but I don't think they even released a soundtrack for that disaster. Denied again.

The soundtrack to "Runaway Jury" features a similar head-fake: The songs you hear in the film -- the ones that weren't written specifically for the film -- aren't on the CD! So, Norah Jones' cover of the Bob Dylan-penned "Heart of Mine" sounds great in the closing credits, but you won't find it on the soundtrack.

And, I'm sure many a Prince fan has wished to hear a released version of that extended "Vicki Waiting" that plays during the Batman film's casino scene.

That's all. Just a simple observation.

Though written for the movie and nominated for an Oscar for "Best Song", the Poetic Justice soundtrack does not include "Again".

And, if I recall, the CD cover mentions there not being any Janet Jackson songs on the CD!!! omfg

To my understandings, labels conflicts are the reasons why these thangs happens.

Its intersting that you pointed this out becoz I felt the same way about "Maclom X" soundtrack as you did!

lol, You're right. At the bottom, it says that. It was because Virgin records is a bitch, and they didn't want to release a Janet song onto a soundtrack that wasn't under their label, so they since they "allowed" it to be used in the film, they made a stipulation that it has to be perfectly clear that Janet was not on the album. I know it doesn't make sense, but that was the story. rolleyes

And "Change is Gonna Come" is an amazing song, and one of the best parts of the movie!

my biggest beef is with the haunting song played during the pivital ending of Set It Off....I recall there was a thread at Rotten Tomatoes trying to figure out who sang and where you can find the song...its beatiful...and rotten tomatoes isnt that hip on soul music so it must have hit a nerve for others to be seeking it out...

anyone know the song?
