hmmm. embrassing no doubt, both were. but (playing devil's advocate) i've seen too many letterman and leno shows where they deliberately goad their 'guests' and slyly attempt to embarass them by dredging up way personal topics that don't merit national attention.

madonna was pissed at letterman, if i recall, because he'd made her the subject of a raunchy joke in which he alleged something to the effect that she'd slept with the entire basketball/football team of new york or some such thing, then he had the nerve to invite her on the show and greet her like a friend. i felt her anger was a bit justifed, however her reaction was tacky. courtney love seems to have taken exception to the fact that letterman spent an inordinate amount of time addressing her sex life. again - justifiable anger expressed in a tacky way.

that being said i think if i were a 'guest' on a letterman/leno show and my 'host' goaded me like that i'd turn to the audience/camera and lay it on the line like "i really don't appreciate this shit. i'm here to promote my latest work. if you can't stick to that topic i'll have to leave." then i'd do just that. then letterman/leno would have fifteen minutes of dead air to fill in. snap
