VAN HUNT Every so often, a "new Prince" comes along: a black singer-songwriter who draws deeply on soul traditions and is unafraid of dealing with rock, clearly musically schooled and able to get around the mannerisms (as entertaining as they are) of hit-radio R & B. Then he disappears or is hung up on a next album or has trouble finding and accepting an audience. Consider Terence Trent D'arby. Consider Bilal. I hope the singer Van Hunt puts out a few more albums quickly, because the promises of his first, "Van Hunt" (Capitol), are too good to squander: solid lyrics about depression as well as ecstasy; horn charts and slow grooves played by real musicians.
