Yes, STEVIE WONDER...

What has he done lately???
His voice is GONE, much like George Clinton's, Bob Dylan's, etc.

disbelief He didn't have to do anything lately. His legacy has been secure for more than 2 generations now. He could have stopped recording after 1976 and that would still have been the case. If Stevie Wonder is overrated so is everyone who ever garnered acclaim, including Prince. And Dylan never had a voice to lose.

The brilliance of his early stuff is unquestionable...but, he's riding
on reputation for the last 20 years.
The 80's stuff was HORRENDOUS...
It happens to alot of folks...Elton John, Rod Stewart, Micheal Jackson.
With age, these folks have lost their singing voice.

Prince is still crystal clear, still jamming, and still underrated.

no no no! bad boy! bad boy!! there is absoulutely no way you can overrate Stevie Wonder cause taken all of his output together he is still da best.
OK, admit: not all of his albums are at the same level ...so what the fuck! it's still better than most others out there
hmmm... now which other artists are there who can't keep up with the impact and the quality of their previous work... lemme think which names spring to my mind..... evillol

anyway, I also like Prince and Stevies more recent output despite the occassional lettdown

Prince hasn't put out only brilliant stuff throughout his entire career either, has he? He has put out a stinker or two as well. A lot of artists are "riding" on earlier reputatations, but that doesn't make them any less of an important influence on today's music, or diminish their credibility. I just don't see how Stevie can be considered overrated anyway, because it's not like he's all you see and hear every time you pick up a newspaper, or turn on the TV or radio these days. Now, let's see, people like Britney and Chingy and other no-talents like that: THAT's where being overrated comes in!

M'shell Ndegeocello

I bought Instant Vintage and Comfort Woman, gave them the requisite minimum of 3 plays beore rendering a verdict and then gave them away to my son's friends.

Instant Vintage tries so hard to be a Stevie Wonder opus that it hurts to see the effort, and Comfort Woman was just boring; New Power Soul has more interest for me than that one. I also don't like M'shells monotonous voice.

One more, Sheryl Crow - the teenagers playing old Ska music in my basement on weekends have more originality than this woman.

With all due respect, you have absolutely no earthly idea of what REAL music is supposed to sound like. Plus the fact, the brotha is not even overrated...he's seriously UNDERRATED. whofarted

But, you are entitled to your opinion. confused

forgot something... Madonna will get no respect as a songwriter/producer because her chosen field of music is Dance. Music of the gay men. No selfrespecting rock critic can call dance an art form with caring about since most dance artist last 6mons-year oh an they macho straight men. Hhhhhhmmmmm 21 years since Everybody and people still rush to the floor when the new Madonna mix comes on.

When was the last time you heard how great Madonna's music is, or oh my god Madonna's newest lyrics are simply the best there is???? I don't recall its ever happened. The success of Like a Prayer was always credited to Patrick Lennord and Steven Bray. The press always talks about William Orbit when comes to Ray of Light and Marwais when comes to Music. No rock critic pays Madonna any mind musiclly. When people speak of Madonna its her image, opinions, clothes, and boyfriends/husbands they talk about. Don't cufuse overrated with overexposed.

Poor lonely computer overrated and overexposed both have the same prefix but totally different meanings.

In case you missed the past 15 years, Madonna has been quite critically acclaimed by mainstream rock critics. Ray Of Light and Like A Prayer, especially. I consider some of her lyrics to be really well crafted and subtle ("Secret"), and so do many critics, but to each his own. If all you think Madonna is is dance, listen to her ballads and other downtempo numbers. And no, her success is not due to Steven Bray, Patrick Leonard, Mirwais or Orbit. She's always written or cowritten her songs (and produced or coproduced).

PS: Dance music isn't just music for gay men wink

I have to disagree w/you on D'Angelo. He's not in the spotlight and he doesn't want it. He makes great music and he's a brilliant musician.

In no particular order:

Lenny Kravitz
Norah Jones
D'Angelo
Maxwell
The Fugees
Although I love him dearly, the post-"Mercury Falling" Sting
Angie Stone (singing over someone else's samples isn't soul music)
OutKast (a great hip-hop act but "S-boxx/TLB" was a big hit-and-big miss affair)
Thicke (just didn't feel much of his much-ballyhooed LP, but mebbe I should give it time)

Most hip-hop acts these days are overrated.

It's hard for me to say this since I own and enjoy something from all of these artists.

I think someone who gets too much press and too much hype is 50 Cent. In my opinion, 50 Cent is Ja Rule w/9 bullets wounds. He has no talent, he has no writing abilities, and his flow is horrible. Yet, he has sold over 6 million units and I guarantee in a year or two, he will be a has-been.
