SLY STONE tribute coming!!!

A tribute cd 2 Sly Stone called SLY 2K will B released this spring
according 2 these news from "Rolling Stone".

Beck, Moby, Audioslave, the Roots, Lenny Kravitz, Maroon 5, Floetry and the Black Eyed Peas will all contribute tracks to Sly 2K, a Sly and the Family Stone tribute album due out this spring.
The album is being produced by Nile Rodgers (Duran Duran, David Bowie). Maroon 5 cut their version of "Everyday People" last Friday in a New York studio. "It's a little rougher around the edges," says singer Adam Levine. "More synthetic in the Daft Punk kind of vein."

With songs such as "Stand," "Everyday People" and "Dance to the Music," Sly and Family Stone brought funk to the mainstream, before Stone's personal difficulties derailed the group. Stone last released an album of new material in 1983. Last June, five original members of the group convened in a Berkeley, California, recording studio to begin work on a new album. Stone was invited to be part of the sessions but did not join the group.

A latecomer to Sly and Family Stone, born right around the time the band hit its late Sixties peak, Levine was introduced to the group when he heard "If You Want Me to Stay" in the movie Dead Presidents.

"It introduced our generation to Sly," says Levine. "Sly's just the funkiest thing ever. He was completely unafraid to do whatever the hell he wanted."

Minus Lenny Kravitz and Beck, this album sounds like it's going to be bored as hell.

They should've enlisted some REAL artists on there like Prince, Raphael Saadiq or Van Hunt along with some REAL vocalists like Bilal, Cee-Lo or Tweet just to name a few.

I like J5's stand, too.

I'm a bit nervous about anyone singin "if you want me to stay". Voice so perfectly suited to the track, you know?

The roots and beck could be cool. Lenny... shake

i've seen 'im do "sd" live back in 2001, except it was basically an instrumental version and he pulled some women up on the stage to dance...i wanna see him do the whole song live one of these days, but i doubt if he'd do it anymore.

Okay - the funny thing about "If You Want Me To Stay" is that he (SLY) is using the Camille trick - speeding up the tape, which is where that edgy/raspiness really cooks up. So, hell yeah, Prince could do it, but would it REALLY sound that different?

I'd rather hear William Shatner do it... THAT would be a new take on the song.

EDIT:
AND WHERE THE HELL IS SLY NOWADAYS? Still Cracked out in a San Diego suburb? The man should realize he's a legend and step out into daylight. Hell, he couldn't do any worse than James Brown.

Okay, this thread just made me bus' out the "Essentials" comp. Of course I had to hear IYWMTS first. It's just too short (3:01), there should be a remix. smile

And thanks for the "Camille" reference. I wanted to mention it in re: Prince. But, I wasn't sure if "Camille" was the voice I had in mind. Anyway, I can't help thinking this song in particular influenced him to use the voice.

As for where is Sly? Gosh, hope he's not cracked out somewhere. If he were ever to go on tour again, the thought of seeing him high as a kite would be really, really sad.

Ahh. There IS!!!!!

Fresh Alternate Mix - the whole record was mixed wrong by an engineer at some point... if you know the Fresh CD like the back of your hand, the alternate mix is a MUST have. Now, I'm not naming names about where you could find such a recording, since I don't think it's been released, "officially" but I'm betting somebody around here has a copy.
