Bonus Jazz Album Of The Day(2/12/04)- Rachelle Ferrell- First Instrument My personal pick as TOUGHEST female vocalist of the last 10 years. This woman sends chill up and down my spine when she sings. Blessed with a six-octave range voice, this woman can do WHATEVER..WHENEVER. Her first album simply entitled Rachelle Ferrell was really an R&B album with jazzy overtones. But this classic recording is a pure acoustic jazz album and it's a great one, INDEED!!! The whole disc is good. The album consist of mostly standards but what Rachelle does with them is beyond words. The highlights are "Prayer Dance"(lawd have mercy you should hear the way this woman caress a lyric with her voice on this number, it's sensual, playful and soulful at the same time), "With Every Breath I Take", "My Funny Valentine" and after all the great performances on this disc, the grand finale is "Autumn Leaves". Just wait until you hear the treatment she gives this standard. Wayne Shorter, Terence Blanchard, Lenny White and Stanley Clark are all in tip-top form on this recording. But clearly this is Rachelle's show. Not since hearing Aretha Franklin's singing have I ever felt this way about a female vocalist. Like Aretha, Rachelle is such a versatile vocalist she can tackle successfully probably any genre she decides to engage herself in. The sky is the limit for this amazing woman. I look so forward to hearing more good works from her in the near and distance future. She is at work currently on a new album. No word on when it will drop.

I love that album, I also dig her debut one alot. But I resent the hell outta her latest album "Can I Be Me?" lawd, that is wack(leave the neo-soul garbage alone, Rachelle).
Ya'll, what about her rendition of Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child"? | |
