The network will not air the TV movie for May sweeps as scheduled

ABC Entertainment has announced the cancellation of “The Lena Horne Story”, starring Janet Jackson, that was scheduled to air in the all-important May sweeps. “We regret the decision because we do believe in the film’s artistic merit but in light of recent events, we had no choice but to pull it”, said Programming VP Marty Feinberg. Mr. Feinberg was making reference to the now infamous performance given by Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl in Houston. In the latter part of their duet, Mr. Timberlake was to remove a section of Ms. Jackson’s costume. As the result of a “wardrobe malfunction” (Mr. Timberlake’s words), Ms. Jackson’s right breast was exposed, sparking an outcry from disapproving viewers. The FCC has even embarked on their own investigation. Mr. Feinberg could not confirm a new airdate for the film but stipulated that “it will definitely be shown”.

Suzanne de Passe, CEO of de Passe Entertainment, the film’s production company, is outraged. Via telephone, Ms. de Passe expressed “extreme disbelief and disappointment” at ABC Entertainment’s decision. “What Janet did at the Super Bowl has no bearing on our film. Other actors have done worse and it didn’t affect the release of their projects so we don’t understand ABC reneging on our agreement to show the film in May.”

Ms. Jackson’s representatives declined our interview requests.

i've actually seen this on janet-xone as well but i haven't been able to see it on the variety website. not saying it isn't accurate, but i haven't seen it confirmed.

and i still stick by the idea that the most important thing in a business that is losing record sales by the minute is 'units moved'. if janet sells a lot of records during the week of 30 january, all of this will be forgotten.

viacom is losing value daily, and this is not only due to janet. it is mostly due to their selling parts of the company. i think they are just trying to scapegoat janet rather than get bad press for bad business deals.

according to BET news and access hollywood, which released a press statement this afternoon, janet has been reinstated into the grammys. it seems as though luther's support, and statement "no janet, no tribute" may have worked. janet will not be amongst the performers doing a tribute but she will be the presenter rather than patti labelle, which was the initial plan.

Lena Horne was an incredible pop vocalist back in the 40s, 50s and 60s (she was sometimes labelled "jazz", but she didn't tend to improvise). She's had an extensive career on film and on record, and she'll be 90 in 2007. It would be an honor for Janet to play her in a biopic.
