R&B Classic of the Day: "Cry Together" by The O'Jays (1978)

"Cry Together"

(written by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff)

monologue

You know,me and my woman,we been goin'
through alot of changes for about six months or so
and it's been real hard to talk to one another
You know,a relationship ain't nothin' without communication
While we were layin' in bed,the both of us lookin'
at the ceiling overhead, eyes wide open about
three o'clock in the mornin'
I said "Baby,we can't go on this way"
She said "You're right"
Then we started holding each other
and I felt a tear roll down my face

(chorus)
Last night me and my woman
We cried together
Said we cried,cried,cried,we cried together

Ain't nothin' wrong with you
there ain't nothin' wrong with me
We're not the only people in the world
who go through ups and downs
All we have to do is talk,we can work it out
Let me kiss your eyes, let me wipe the tears away
Let me hold you tight, tomorrow we'll feel better
cause it's a brand-new day

Last night me and my woman
We cried together
Said we cried,cried,cried,we cried together

Now we have times when we laugh hardy
we even go out on the town and we party party
Everyday the sun doesn't shine, sometimes it has to rain
just like we enjoy the pleasure
we have to stand the pain
Oh,let me kiss your eyes, let me wipe the tears away
Let me hold you close, let's talk to each other
I wanna hear what you got to say

(chorus)

OMG I love this song, momma loves this song 2 death too. she always used to play it while cooking back in the day.

Ja Rule & Lil'Mo sampled it back in 2001 "Cry" and it became a big hit.

"Stairway to Heaven" is my favorite O'Jays ballad. I've always thought it was written in memory of late bandmember William Powell.

Was he the light-skinned brother on this album (far left)...

If so, do you know how he passed?

The O'Jays have a really nice cut on The Fighting Temptations soundtrack, BTW...three to be exact (one feat. Angie Stone and the other feat. Beyonce). thumbs up!

Yep! That's him. He died of cancer over 20 years ago. When I was a kid my mom took me with her to see the O'Jays perform. I had an instant crush on him. love I must've been 5! eek

Oh, and what I remembered most about seeing them perform was Powell's process. Guess that's what they called it back then. I mean, he didn't have an afro, but a slick 'do.

And speaking of hair, I'm glad that Walter Williams stopped wearing that toupee! thumbs up!
