Macy Gray appreciation thread

It strikes me that Macy Gray is hardly being discussed at this forum, while she is in my opinion the funkiest woman in the business. She's cool, she's nasty, she's a freak.

So I think it's time for a Macy appreciation thread, for Macy is the one and only Funkateer of the new generation.

What do y'all think?

It's a shame that she's being ignored by the masses.I think she's really talented with something new and different to offer.Isn't she currently on tour with David Bowie?

Yes she is, but I think they only do the states, and that's a little far for me. I'm looking forward to her next visit to Holland!

What about her being ignored by the masses: I do'nt think that's a problem. She stays true to her musical background and gives it a new spin, creating a style of her own. That's a thousend times better than being a commercial sell- out!

True. But I still would like for her to have a little more success and recognition. She's simply too talented to be considered a "one hit wonder".

I see your point, but the case is that she has a consirable fan- base, and cant hardly be consired as a 'one hit wonder'. People who think she is, also probably think that Diamonds and Pearls was Prince last album.

However, it indeed would be nice if her music was played more on the radio or MTV, but that counts for the most good artists. I think we just have to accept that there's no good music on the radio!

I think you forgot Midnite Vultures, by Beck. Released the same time as "On How Life Is", I was bangin' these two CDs back to back when they came out. Oh the memories...

Yeah I love that tune! This is just one example of Macy's briliant lyrics.

Don't if The ID is one of the best releases ever, because I can't really pick one of her albums being the best. It's like choosing the best child among your own children. Saying that the ID is her best album would make her other albums feel upset.

I had no real appreciation of Macy until I saw her a few weeks ago with Bowie. I had no idea how funky she was! Now I'm planning to get all her music.

Her music is a little bit one dimensonal IMO, but she´s got a unique voice and I really like some of her songs. And she´s a great live artist, very funky indeed.
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Macy Gray's first two albums are two of my favourites in recent memory. "The Trouble With Being Myself", while not as good, was unfortunately ignored.

But Macy, babe, you seriously need to lay off the pot, ok? It's not good to look frazzled and stoned in every single photo/public appearance.

True. But, still, I've loved her since I heard and saw the video for I Try. And The Id is a great album that I love, love, love. The Trouble With Being Myself ain't bad either. biggrin

Macy is very cool and a breath of fresh air. I love her music and her unique voice. Unfortunately, she ain't got nothing overly sexy to shake or reveal, so perhaps that's part of the reason why she doesn't get much notice. shrug

That's exactly the reason I don't like her. When she first came out, I heard the song, thought it was cool, then I saw her interviewed on vh1 or somehthing. She was stupid as hell and I was turned off right away. I mean, Christina Augilera was on before her and she was articulate. I think it was grammy nominations or something. Then Macy comes on and I was like, wow, what a difference. Of course, now Christina has gone downhill.

I love how each album is different and it seems like she's growing as an artist.

She's getting into acting I've recently read somewhere but her last album didin't sell that well.

I haven't seen her public appearances and I'm kind of glad now.

I'll always be a fan of hers, she's funky.

I love that she's always stoned...but then again, I'm a fried stoner.

I think The Trouble With Being Myself is as good as The Id...which is saying A LOT cuzzin' both of those albums kick my ass regularly...I've burned 'em for everyone I can think of, and I can't stop listening.

her dazed act did bother me in print and on intetvciews and awards shows

however I read she cleaned up her act

but I think Macy is actually touched i.e crazy...I cant front on that.

I mean she could take th e cool freak route and be a semi manson etc...but she chose to be the dazed and confused freak...just as long as she a freak is ok with me

at least she isnt just another Ashanti etc

I have only played her new one 2 times when it came out--I coldn't get into it because it wasn't immediately The Id...and so many other releases were purchased

I realize I have this practically unheard Macy release ..I need to play it and give it a chance etc

You sure should give it listen, and before you know it that CD will live in your CD- player.

Oh yes sir nod

Bootsy Collins & George Clinton spoke greatly of her being the FUNK queen of this generation.

I don't have a problem with he act, she's uninhipited(on stage and obeviously off). Remember, Chaka Khan was EXACTLY like that in the 80's(same spontanious spirit and same nasty mouth) thats what I like about them.

They also share this problem(DRUGS) not Chaka anymore tho.

And RD lol I thought her nasty act was a turn on to you wink

Dont'cha love it when that happens? I did exactly the same thing with Macy's newest, except I fell in love with it back in September/October.

I love Macy! Her voice is great, and so are her songs. I also loved her rendition of "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" at Icon: Janet.

I totally dug that performance. That version was funk! My sisters for some reason thought it was the worst performance from Icon? Some people don't "get" Macy.

It was so totally funky, and the best performance on icon. She sounded great and made the song like one of her own. She did Janet some justice.
