so I'm tapping away on this.. thing
while simultaneously "channel-surfing"

when none other than Cyndi Lauper shows her little blonde self on "Letterman"..

she starts into this.. "folksy" version of the Aretha classic until you come back to me (that's what I'm gonna do..

& I'm thinking to myself - "how DARE she???"


I turn my head to the monitor, peep her for a few, & say to myself

"hm, she's uh.. showin' her age just a bit.."


then,

as the song goes on, I find myself boppin' to the beat..


by the time the song ends,
I realize that Cyndi has had me.


by the time the "Letterman Credits" roll,
I realize that this show was done like.. last fall!

i cant listen to her new album at the moment..every freakin time i listen i cry...cyndi lets a side of herself out in that new album... WOW!!


i cant..there are a couple songs that have extra meaning right now...i was gonna share but im gonna keep em to myself for a lil while longer...

I have always, always loved Cyndi. Hers is one of the most underappreciated voices these days, and She's So Unusual remains one of the most vibrant debut albums of the 80s.

I still haven't picked up her new album, but y'all are makine me want to!!

i love her so. i was gonna pay a lot of money just to see her open for cher, and then leave. glad i didn't cause she twisted her ankle the night before in houston, and didn't perform.

She's been making the talk-show circuit lately. I caught her on another show, last week. She was sitting in with the house band, and they were launching into "Change of Heart," and it was jamming!!! Unfortunately, the show cut to commercial.

She's the bomb. A great songwriter. Her little "Behind the Music" special got me back into her, but I haven't tracked down her albums yet. Maybe a "Best of" disc, if there is one...

Her cover of Strawberry Fields really impressed me. I gotta get her greatest hits and then some other cds by her. I totally respect her, but for some reason never got around to buying her cds.

the more I think about it, the more I would (also) say that she's "underrated" or underappreciated, both in terms of her vocal talent (she can sing) & her body of work..

hm.

maybe it's because when she 1st became known, she was seen (by many) as a "gimmick", what with her hair & outfits & all that?

I myself might have thought that initially,
but once I heard Time After Time,
I knew..

Unfortunately Cyndi seems to have been frozen in time with her "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" single, video and image, for a lot of people. I can't call myself more than a casual fan of hers, since I don't own anything by her, but I am a fan, nevertheless.

About 3 1/2 years ago a friend of mine gave me a cd to listen to, didn't tell me who it was, and was stunned to find out it was Cyndi Lauper. I still haven't seen the credits to the cd, but I take his word for it.

Over the years I've been impressed with her interpretive skills of cover songs. I saw her perform "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" {Stevie Wonder's song, but Aretha completely made it her own and that's the version most of us know} on Letterman too. And she gave it a different spin, all her own.

A couple of years ago I was debating her cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" with someone...I dug it, this other person said it was a disgrace. Now, I haven't heard her version in YEARS, so I don't know if I'm forgetting something about it or not, but I was impressed with it, and it's hard to impress me when you're covering ANYTHING from the What's Going On album.

Of course this is not to say that the original and definitive version was one-upped, or anything.
