joan jett attacked......

...at political rally.

Two political rallies turned into a brawl Saturday night in Des Moines.

A Democratic rally at Drake's Olmstead Center, urged young Iowans to get out and vote. It was targeted toward high school and college students. A group known for not voting. The rally featured comedian Janene Garafalo and classic rock star Joan Jett, but it got a surprise visit from some unwanted guests.

A group of college republicans at their Midwest caucus leadership conference heard about the rally and stormed in.

"There are seven of us who worked really hard at putting this conference together, said Jason Cole of the college republicans. "so, we met, discussed and majority ruled. We went down there."

What they didn't discuss is what to do if things get out of hand. One of the Bush supporters shoved Jett and she pushed back in anger. Ole said that was the decision of one person, and not at all representative of what the conference was trying to do.

Campus security did show up break things up. The concert did resume as planned. In fact, Jett wrapped up her day with two more performances. One in Fort Dodge, the other in Marshalltown.

Republicans acting stupid and bullying random people? Whodathunkit?

I can just imagine the round-table discussion before the "majority ruled".

Clem: "Them there libs are havin' a pow-wow!"

Jeb: "Let's go break it up! That scrawny Blackheart chick is no match for me! Ima put her in her place."

All: "YEAH!"

I find it really amusing that their leader keeps referring to it as a "conference" or a "caucus" when the article makes it sound like a nomadic band of hillbillies.

DIdn't Joan Jett give Britney the rights to cover her "I love rock and roll" song? That's enough reason to get attacked!

But even if she did it's not like she could stop Britney from doing something like that. A few years ago I saw No Doubt being interviewed on the topic of those "Stars on 54" type albums. Apparently there was a dance music cover of "Don't Speak" that was getting quite a bit of airplay and they weren't very happy about it (they weren't angry but felt the way the song was redone wasn't the right tone) but the interview said that they have no control over something like that. But the songwriters still get paid. In Joan's case, just because she helped make this song popular doesn't mean she gets a cent of Britney's cover verison, which is kind of a shame.

When I first heard that, I honestly gave Britney the benefit of the doubt and thought that maybe there was some bootleg verison of Pat doing the song that she really liked. After all, Pat was never afraid of covers. Should have known better!

Jaime, I hope you also posted this in the Politics and Religon thread. Very telling. I wish Joan would have bite the guy's head off. And I mean literally bite it the fuck off!

some artists do get that though. for example, even though she's never written a lick of music, Celine Dion's demands a writing credit with ASCAP or BMI, with the understanding that because a song is on her album, it's going to sell X number of copies more. of course, this is waived for covers, and also when she uses songs by songwriting superstars who command their own high fees (David Foster, Dianne Warren, etc.), but that's a big part of how Celine gets paid. i'm not sure if that's still the case since her comeback, but i know it was during her heyday.

It's awful and I hope the kids were/are punished, but I can imagine Dem college kids doing the same thing. It may or may not be reflective of greater political issues, but as it stands you can't say "only a Republican"

When did she ever go away? I saw her like three years ago playing in Central Park on the 4th of July, then not too long after that I saw her in Rocky Horror on Broadway. It seems like she's always been around - she's never been the biggest star in the world, but she seems to do well for herself.

Why can't someone attack Chrissie Hynde? Every time I hear about her throwing a bucket of blood on someone wearing a fur coat I just think, "Man, she needs to go write some more songs or something."
