Old-Skool Disco Joint of the Night: Secret Weapon, "Must Be The Music"

I like this 1981 groove. I once read that it was quite popular in the Bronx.

Flashin' lights, movin' to the beat
Mirror walls and fo-g at your feet
I'm just a DJ, baby, mixin' for you
I will not stop until this club night is through

Must Be The Music.. That's turnin' me on..
dancing jig

Then Deion Sanders went and bastardized it by remaking it with "Must Be The Money."

Secret Weapon's "Must Be The Music" was an uneasy but successful marriage of funk and slinky disco riffs. It's a disco record about disco,in this case a club jock speculating about his cosmic mission of disseminating musical ecstasy.According to musicologiost Sean Ross,it was also the first disco record to incorporate rap (before Indeep's brilliant "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life"),now of course standard dance music practice. (The rap, incidentallly,is delivered in that insufferably fruity, thankfully obsolete Sugar Hill Gang style and is little more than a quaint period piece;the rest of the record is quite attractive).

***taken from the liner notes to Rhino's 'The Disco Years Volume 5:Must Be The Music' CD,written by Ken Barnes.
