Stevie Wonder: Music of my Mind

I love this album from 1972 and wonder why it doesn't get the same attention as other albums of the same time.

So funky, so pure and then there's the song "Keep On Running" that just touches my soul with it's soul and funk.

Track List

Love Having You Around
Superwoman (where were you when I needed you)
I love Everylittle Thing About You
Sweet Little Girl
Happier than the Morning Sun
Girl Blue
Seems so Long
Keep on Running
Evil

People here have turned me on to some music I wouldn't have sought out on my own, so I will also get in the habbit.

Let's hear what all of the cool cats of the Org have to say about this kick-ass Stevie Album!

I don't think the album is as fully realized as his later albums were. This is not to say I don't think it's a good album, I do, I just don't think it's as cohesively focused as his next two (Talking Book, Innervisions) were. And of course SITKOL. I might rank it equally (might!) with Fulfillingness' First Finale.

It still contains some of Stevie's most essential songs.

"Superwoman" kills me.

Thanks for the input, Talking Book and Innervisions always received attention but i just love this album

Superwomen is the only song I initially recognized.

"Love Having You Around" is just another JAM!

What's great about this album is that it marked the beginning of that whole "Wonderful" era!!
This was the first album that Stevie wrote, arranged and produced himself. It was a big step.
"Keep On Runnin' is funky, and I've always thought it would work well in a movie. When I first heard this album the one track that really stood out to me in addition to "Superwoman" was "Happier Than The Morning Sun". I love the melody and the feel.

IMHO I believe this was the album/period where Stevie was considering making the talkbox a prominent instrument in his sound (ie "Love Having You Around" and "Girl Blue"), but eventually decided to favor the clavinet and arp & moog synthesizers instead. If I'm not mistaken, Syreeta's debut self-titled album (also produced by Wonder) was released around this time on MoWest and contained her own version of "I Love Every Little Thing About You" (same melody, but completely different and way funkier with the prominent use of wah-wah clavinets and so forth). He also experiments quite well on talkbox on "She's Leaving Home."

Anyway, now that I have drifted completely off the subject...I mentioned all of that to say that I believe this album was relased during a time where Stevie was kind of searching for his own sound. If he hadn't finished by then, he was probably in negotiations with Barry Gordy for complete control over his music and was trying to prove a point to the record company that he was definitely worthy of calling the shots (thus explaining the emphasis placed on him performing ALL of the instruments in the linear notes).

Nevertheless, I love the album...especially "Superwoman/Where Were You When I Needed You."

Excellent masterpiece and very timeless! music

I thought it was his clavinet, that funky key sound that figures so heavily in Higher Ground, Superstition, etc...

This album is the beginning of THE ERA, for me. Not as complex or sophisticated as SITKOL, FFF or Innervisions, but a nice introduction to that golden era.
