Co-sign! I was let down with All For You, but I have a feeling this one is going to be awesome.

Wasn't a thing wrong with "All For You" It's not as much about the album as it is the public's mind set when it comes out. Janet is still doin her thang.

Like Prince, I just think she writes better in pain. The Velvet Rope was her masterpiece and she was hurting, All for you was just too happy and sappy for me. Give me "U" and "What About" ANYday!

TVR is an incredible album. AFY - wtf was that though? One smooth, classic first single, maybe, but much of the rest was limp, lifeless and sterile. The title track was coyly sexy and the instrumentation complimented her voice perfectly. In short, it was alluring. As is "Someone To Call My Lover", despite the sample (please refrain from sampling, Janet). Janet doing hard-edged rock on "You Ain't Right" and "Trust A Try" sounds ridiculous ("Black Cat" succeeded where these failed because it was melodic in a Joan Jett kind of way), and I hate the ultra-processed vocals. "Doesn't Really Matter" is a really cute pop tune but that's about it. We were stuck with more of her bland orgasms and rain storms ("When We Oooo") and cookie-cutter monotony (the seven-minute "Truth"). "Better Days" and "China Love" were pretty good, though. I hope the new one is great, though. I just won't judge it by the first single, this time around.

no no no!

the album had some great tracks..and some average fillers...

i cant believe i janet used to be my most favorite artist...she was pumping solid work until AFY...

im hoping she skips the samples this time..cause they have made her and JJ/Lewis rather lazy in their songwriting...

I can't wait either. But as far as sampling goes, Janet and Jimmy and Terry have always used samples since Rhythm Nation.

"Rhythm Nation" itself was a sample of Sly and the Family Stone's "Thank You...". On the Janet Album, the break down of "If" is Love Child from The Supremes and Funky Big Band is another sample (which escapes me now) and "What'll I Do" also is has a sample.

"Velvet Rope" samples "Tubular Bells," "You" samples "Cisco Kid" from War. In fact most of the first half of The Velvet Rope has samples in the songs.

I never minded the samples because Jimmy and Terry know how to incorporate them into the music and make them fresh sounding, unlike Puffy-- who just straight jacks the whole song.

But I'm ready for the new Janet and can't wait until the Super Bowl.

"If" also contains interpolations of the Full Force produced "Bang Zoom (Let's Go Go)" by The Real Roxanne, although never credited in the song's liner notes.

I know right! My boy Howie Tee needs some money. I'm not saying a lawsuit should be filed, but somebody in Janet or Flyte Tyme camp has to recognize that "Bang Zoom (Let's Go Go)" was sampled in "If." Some royalty points should be kicked their way.

that's true. and All For You sounds just like both of them. i'd like to see her try making a great album by doing something even slightly different than the formula that's worked since 1993. it's getting stale...

The Velvet Rope and All For You are completely different albums, written at completely different times in her life.

AFY served its purpose. I think a lot of people hate on it because everyone comes in with expectations. Janet has some things she does all the time like interludes, dance tracks and "baby making songs" (as she calls them), but I think AFY reflected a newly-single Janet coming to terms with her 30-somethingness, divorce, life and the future albeit optimistically. You feel all of this in the album. TVR was an antithesis to AFY, the albums contrast thematically. TVR harbored in darkness of introspection and evaluation while AFY tried stepping confidently into the light of self-determination. Thumbs up.

Hate her interludes. So fucking pointless. She'll say something like "men are sooo lame" against a rainstorm backing track. Or she'll have a pointless answering machine message. Also, pretentious interlude lines like "There's nothing more depressing than having everything - and still feeling sad. You must learn to water your spiritual garden." simply sound ridiculous and add nothing to the album. Next time I want that, I'll turn on Oprah. Way to up the tracklisting (and my annoyance, as I have to skip over each interlude).

So, I have one hope for the new album: that she drops the interludes (and drops them for good). They were tolerable during the RN and janet eras, when the songs were so good that you didn't notice them, but I felt they damaged the overally flow of TVR, which was a killer album but could have been even better. They just served to bog down AFY.

I totally agree the interludes are the WORST.
