In defense of Jewel's dance music In antoher thread about sell out's, a few people screamed at Jewel for selling out with her sexy new image the album "0304@, an album I admit I don't own. However, I just wanted to post my thoughts on this becuase I hardly think that was Jewel did was selling out considering she hardly sold out anything and the CD was kind of a flop. I basically reposted this from antoher thread. Just wondering what others think. Can I get anyone to back me up on this?
I know that everyone wants to scream "sell out" everytime an artist does something that alienates their fans but I don't think that is the case with Jewel at all. Think abou it. What happened with Jewel doesn't make sense on paper or anywhere else! Her "0304" didn't sell as well as her last album (this is trend of her since nearly every album of hers seems to sell about half of the last) Anyway, since when has dance music been a garunteed home run sucess of selling records? It isn't. It's pretty risky and Madonna is just about the only dance music artist that seems to really sell records (which will probably be the reason she will return to it, like she has in the past). Look at the biggest sellers from 2002. It was Avril and Pink. That was very poppy rock music (Pink had a touch of dance but nothing like "Intitution"). And I believe her 'Standing Still" single, a very light pop rock song did much better on the charts than "Intution". I think Jewel took a chance that she knew could have failed and kind of did. I hardly think that Jewel thought she was going to be on the top of the charts with dance music. She must have been into it. I've heard another song from "0304" called "America" and didn't excatly sound like average dance music that does well on the charts. Now while her new sexy image might have been a marketing gimick, I'll give you that, but I think she took a genuine chance with the music that she wanted to take and it didn't work for her at all. And if it did work, I think we would hear more screams of sell out becuase it was a sucess. I just think that when someone does something you don't like it isn't always selling out. It's just a mistake or an error in judgement. | |
