Is your music collection sexist? Or maybe I should say gender specific? Guess what I mean is, what do you own more of? Music by female or male artists/bands?
Yeah, I've got Aretha, the Supremes, Missy E., Destiny's Child...but male acts dominate my music collection.

I've noticed that as I get older my music collection gets more and more female-heavy. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

My music collection is mostly female. Not into hearing guys sing love songs. Unless it's a truly great voice like Marvin or Luther.

Same here. But to answer the question of the thread, I've never truly counted how many male and female artists/groups I have in my collection. Maybe I should. But I've never consciously distinguished between genders when it comes music. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

There are plenty of guys who don't sing love songs. Try Bowie. He probably only has about 10 songs about love.

Funny. I was making a mix-tape for a friend on Thursday night and I was DESPERATELY trying to find CDs from female artists...but the ratio of male to female musicians in my CD collection is VASTLY unbalanced.
I have lots of CDs from Marianne Faithfull, Neko Case, Millie Jackson, X, Wendy O Williams and a handful from Kate Bush, Sinead O'Connor, Madonna and Bjork...but it's still mostly dudes. I need to invest in some more chick music. I feel like a chauvinist pig.

My collection used to be dominated by female artists until I got to a point where I thought it was a bit weird that if it wasn't Bowie or Prince, chances are if a guy was singing I wouldn't be interested. So I tried to extend my horizons a bit, and these days I'm not even really bothered to consider the gender of who I'm listening to.

I would say mine is equal...

If it was made from around the 90s onward, I think females in general have been doing the much more interesting work and therefore my collection reflects that.
I think 3 of the greatest talents in popular music today are Meshell Ndegeocello, Ani Difranco, and Bjork.

Wendy & Lisa
Joni Mitchell Heart Alanis Morrisette Olivia Newton-John (guilty pleasure) Prince-protege's The above are the only CDs I own that are by female artists ...so my collection is a bit sexist, unfortunately.

Mine is mixed...I used to think I wasn't into female vocalists, but then I got into Fiona Apple, Michelle Branch, Evanescience, Dido, Vanessa Carlton, Juliana Hatfield, Bjork etc. It's about the voice and the emotion behind it. So I'm into to both female and male singers and my music collection reflects that. [This message was edited Wed Dec 17 12:02:22 PST 2003 by TonyC]

I've found that most people's music collections are very human-centric. I mean, how many of you own even one CD by a Fish-person? There is a definite bias in the music industry toward human-beings, and I think its time it stopped!!!
Amphibians are rarely even signed to record deals, usually being forced to play to various animals in their lagoons. The discrimination is blatant!!!

I will list the Female artists in my cd collection of well over 400 CDs
Complete catalogues of Portishead My Bloody Valentine Curve Massive Attack Assorted discs from... Morcheeba Aimee Mann (Magnolia Soundtrack) Swallow Insides Julie Cruise Ella Fitzgerald Billie Holiday Shirley Horn I'd say my collection is about 90% male. Unless you count female players too. I was just counting female vocalists. All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. All the fellas say ruff if you're only giving up the bone.

I find that female singers come a dime a dozen. Its hard for them to attract my attention. There are very few men with great vocal skills. That's why when the good ones release albums I will be more willing to fork over the money. D'Angelo, Prince, Raphael, Aaron Hall, Brian McNight.I loved Stevie Ray Vaughn's Blues voice.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my Alica Keys, Kelis and others
