Hendrix or Santana? Who do you prefer, Jimi Hendrix or Santana?
I know both have a unique style, and therefore cannot be compared objectively. So I am not asking who do think is a better guitar player, but who's misuc do you like more? As for me, I prefer to listen to Jimi. But than again, I also like Santana's older stuff...

Did you know that Jimi wanted to join the Santana band? Carlos met him at Woodstock and they became friends. One day he came to a Santana band rehearsal and told Carlos "I wanna join your band!".Carlos was thrilled, but he told Jimi "If you join, there will be nothing for ME to do".
but to answer the question,I prefer Carlos Santana.I have all of his albums and I love the whole Latin/rock/fusion/jazz/soul/funk thing he had going on,particularly on his 70s albums. His 'Borboletta' album (1974) LIVES in my CD player.

Didn't know that. But how amazing it would have been; Jimi Hendrix and santana in one band!

Didn't know that. But how amazing it would have been; Jimi Hendrix and santana in one band! Indeed! I bet that if Jimi had lived, the two of them would have eventually done an album together.

I love them both - I can't really compare the two because their styles are very different. Santana is like a soul latin and Hendrix is R&B metal

Santana - no question, although I do like some of Jimi's music and he was an amazing guitarist.

Jimi Hendrix was WAY ahead of his time. He was talking about samplers in the 60s!! Carlos is gifted, but I don't think his imaginations holds a stick to Jimi. Carlos has been doing the psychedelic latin thing for what 30somfin years now??? All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. All the fellas say ruff if you're only giving up the bone.

Jimi's musical imagination and execution was on a totally different level than Santana's. He was a Brother From Another Planet. Forced to choose one it's easily Jimi for me. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Hey if U play better then I'm all ears... LS: Why do you always turn people's opinions back towards their own creativity? The topic isn't, "who's better, Hendrix, Santana, or yourself?" Let a guitar player have an opinion about another guitar player. They're not saying, "I play better than both, so I can judge", they're saying, "I play guitar, and from what I've heard, I like that player better". I like Hendrix better. Some Santana I like, and if Hendrix HAD lived, I'm sure he'd have put out as many duds as winners. Santana's weakness is that he can't sing, so he's limited in what he can do, just like Kenny Wayne Shepherd - they'll always be limited by their singers. That's the thing about Jimi, he had a great style that try as U may but no one will ever replicate... and if its technical proess that U're after then U cannot go past the likes of Nuno Bettencourt, Vai, Malmsteen and ofcourse Satch. For me its some of the great Flamenco guitarists that grab me, I've always wondered what Paco De Lucia would do if he picked up an electric... -"If U don't like,
what U see here -get the FUNK out."

easily hendrix... even at carlos santana's creative peak, i would take hendrix...
i love the hendrix... absolutely love the man... he took the guitar into a whole new realm... there are a lot of great guitar players, but only a few innovators of the style... like b.b. king or chuck berry or t-bone walker... hendrix was an innovator... carlos santana is merely good at what he does... and while i can't stand his music (new or old - i can't fuckin' stand santana), i do respect him...
