GRAMMY OUTRAGE OVER STREISAND NOMINATION; RECORD RELEASED WEEKS AFTER QUALIFICATION DATE

The Recording Academy had hoped to raise it image after removing former president Michael Greene after serious ethical concerns were raised about his leadership.

But the 46th annual GRAMMY AWARDS has already hit a sour note over a Grammy nomination given to Barbra Streisand's THE MOVIE ALBUM -- a recording which was released weeks after a September 30 cut-off date for eligibility!

MORE

"I have it in writing from SONY that Barbra was on her website giving access to downloads [before September 30]," claimed Diane Theriot, Senior Vice President of Awards for the Recording Academy, this weekend.

In the growing controversy, SONY will be asked to document how Streisand.com offered downloads, a Grammy source said.

"She sure is not offering downloads now on her site," said a concerned Grammy official from Los Angeles.

There are no mentions of any downloading offers in Streisand.com's extensive archive of press releases.

At one point Streisand.com did direct pre-release buyers to AMAZON.COM, which offered a download preview of the track WILD IS THE WIND.

But the download song on AMAZON was not the final version of the song appearing on the qualifying CD, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

It was an out-take from MOVIE ALBUM rehearsals!

MORE

Streisand's own website states: "The MOVIE ALBUM hits the stores on October 14th."

The website also trumpets an Oct 14th appearance on OPRAH "as the talk show host celebrates the release that day of Ms. Streisand's new CD, 'The MOVIE ALBUM.'"

A SONY rep reached late Sunday did acknowledge the CD was released a full two weeks after the qualifying date, but defended the Streisand nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal, adding "we're not the only ones out there nominated" who hit the stores after September 30.

The winners will be announced in a CBS broadcast Feb. 8 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

But that is totally different thing. The new artist thing is nominated for when people are first recognized and it doesn't matter when your album was released. For example, Hottie and the Blowfish big debut album didn't make the cut becuase it really became popular a year or so after it's release but they were nominated as best new artist. This BNA thing is always a pain in the ass. Shelby Lynne had been around for like 15 years and got nominated not to long ago and won.

I understand why this is big controversy becuase some albums are so close to making the cut but fail so it makes sense that they are making a bid deal about it. And how big of Drudge, one of the biggest Connies out there, to point this out! Wow Drudge. Those damn liberals better not try to get nominated for pontless Grammys on your watch!

They had to clarify the rules in recent years. From their website:

Category 4

Best New Artist
(For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)

Evanescence

50 Cent

Fountains Of Wayne

Heather Headley

Sean Paul

Fountains of Wayne have also been around for a few years. They had two unsucessful albums on Warner before moving on to S-Curve/Virgin and released their 'breakthrough'...WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS which has been praised by music critics everywhere...their silly single 'Stacy's Mom' is also their first charted hit EVER.
Every minute of last night is on my face today....

That's funny, I could've sworn that Fountains of Wayne's debut album in the mid 90s was actually fairly successful, and that people knew who they were.
