DURAN DURAN LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last night, I witnessed the triumphant return of the original lineup of Duran Duran to Houston. All I have to say is, I can die now! They expertly weaved through hits, as well as obscure album cuts. Andy Taylor did a damned good job of playing the newer hits, previously mastered by Warren Cuccurrulo, and Roger seemed like he'd never left at all. Too incredible!
The set list (as near as I can remember it. Hopefully I'm not leaving anything out): FRIENDS OF MINE PLANET EARTH HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF COME UNDONE WHAT HAPPENS TOMORROW NEW RELIGION IS THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD KNOW BEAUTIFUL COLOURS NIGHT BOAT ORDINARY WORLD SAVE A PRAYER NOTORIOUS GIRLS ON FILM (night version) CARELESS MEMORIES WILD BOYS ---- REFLEX RIO [This message was edited Tue Nov 25 14:13:27 PST 2003 by JediMaster] Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. Nov 30th!

I have to say, when they all came out and stood at the front of the stage as the show began, I got goosebumps! I've always loved Duran, through all of tis various incarnations, but it was an incredible feeling to see the original five standing side-by-side once more. I truly thought I'd never see this day come!
And this is just the beginning! This is only a warm-up tour! Next year, we get the new album, as well as a full-blown world tour! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

You might try the day of the show. They sold out in 30 minutes here in Houston, but they dropped some more seats about three days before the show! If you get the chance, it is worth it! (If for nothing else, to hear "New Religion", "Friends Of Mine" and "Night Boat" played live. I never thought I'd hear those songs played in concert by them) Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. Mucho $$$, but if they don't sell that way, they gotta sell normal seats!

Japan huh? I had forgotten about them. Another group spawned out of the New Romantics movement. never held a candle to Duran for me (of course, very few groups do). I saw them play Skin Trade on the Big Thing tour, and it positively rocked! That's the thing I love abOut Duran though, every time I've seen them, they've thrown in some surprise that you're not expecting to hear! http://www.planetrick.com/ My brain has just turned to jelly. Thanks Vina, although I'm gonna have to look at it at home. Apparently, something on the site triggers our "anti-porn" software at work (you'd be amazed at all the sites that do that, most of which are quite innocent). Now I gotta wait to see these pics!!! I'm practically panting like a dog right now. It suddenly hit me today. I'm getting butterflies already. Duran Duran is the reason I decided to make music. The original lineup has such a magic, even though I don't care for John or Andy much. Roger is one of the best drummers, on par with Stewart Copeland. I have a concert from 83 on video, they play songs from the first 2 albums. Night Boat is sooo Pink Floydish. New Religion is just EXSTACY. Simon, although not the best singer in the world just gives his ALL. What a performance!

That goes a little too far. I wouldn't call him a 'good' drummer. I'd rather compare him with Charlie Watts: the wrong drummer in the right band. This is not to say that Duran Duran are not greater than the Stones and the Beatles, or that JT and Johnny Depp are not the reasons why one could call me bisexual. Oh, and the org should rather be a Duran Duran fan site, since they are way more happening than Prince.

If you listen and watch him, you'll see a similarity. Roger once said he tries his best to "hit as many drums as possible", yet his playing is melodic in a way. I don't think I'm going too far. I hold both drummer with high respect. As far as I know, Watts didn't do a whole lot of embelishing, but I'm not a Stones fan so I can't say for certain. I didn't compare Roger to John Densmore, that would be pushing it. Roger is a Drum God. Trust me. If you can't even call him a good drummer, you're not listening to his playing. And I don't mean just the singles either. You gotta see him in action. I got videos... Wait a minute, are you talking about Stewart or Roger? We'll either way, I disagree. They are both great musicians and did more than drummers do in pop music today. It's all programing now. Actually Matt Chamberlain and Wil Calhoun are great, but that's not considered pop music. Back in 83, Duran and the Police were pop, or at least pop/rock. [This message was edited Tue Nov 25 19:21:26 PST 2003 by VinaBlue]

Seeing them live, it really hit me how much Roger had been missing fromthe group's sound. All the other lineups, Roger was the only one who was really truly missing. Warren was able to cover Andy just fine (in my opinion, he's the superior guitarist. That isn't a slight against Andy, who kicks ass, but Warren is on par with Vai or Satriani). John was only missing because of what he lent to the creative process, not becasue of his playing (again, this isn't an insult. John is a better songwriter than he is player. His bass playing is fine, but there are better bassists out there. John really contributed more to the creative side of things than anything else). All in all, Roger was the true missing ingredient, almost as vital to the sound as Simon's lyrics and Nick's incredible keyboard soundscapes (when its all said and done, these two guys were the backbone of Duran, not just because of the fact that they were in all the different lineups. Nick is the true genius of the group, creating incredible soundscapes, while Simon is the poet). Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

I love that last line! I totally agree. Roger did a lot rhythmically to enhance the music, without overdoing it or overpowering it. Andy is good and I do like Warren better, but I can't WAIT to hear the old tracks live with Andy kicking ass. The thing is that the 5 guys had a magic, what started it all. John is good too, although he's always bothered me a bit. Listening to some of the tracks, he came up with some really creative baselines. He's not a virtuoso, but Duran Duran isn't a band that does extended solos and things like that. It's all about the balance of all the sounds. You can hear the love and respect they have for each other.
