Why I hate rap music.

I use the word music loosely, most rap music I do not consider to be music. Now back to why I hate rap music? Let me count the ways;

-I hate the way rappers brag about themselves.
-I hate the way rapper refer to women as bitches and whores.
-I hate the fact that there is very little if any melody in rap songs
-I think rap songs sends the wrong message to our young people.
-I hate the fact that rap songs glorify the "thug-life".
-I hate the rap videos making it appear that the rapper is rich when we all know that the fancy cars and "bling-bling" belongs to the record company.

Woah. This is quite a gutsy post.

I actually agree with you on all the points you've made here. I question the sweeping use of the word "rap" though. You're referring to the Top 40 rap - Nelly, Ja Rule, 50 Cent, etc - which is talentless, easy, disposable, one-night-stand trash. No arguments there.

But if you listen to independent and community radio, you'll hear all the good rap - the stuff which sends a good message to youth, is well composed and written, and doesn't glorify thug life. There's a lot of it out there if you look for it.

Bag out the top 40 stuff all you like, just be careful in throwing around the word "rap" like that.

no, not all is bad, but a lot of it is b-o-r-i-n-g (and yes, that includes Common and the Roots; and yes, I did my homework)

I don't think that ALL rap music sucks either, but JW1914 does have some valid points. I hate the same things JW1914 does, but I also think there is some good rap out there that's not negative or demeaning. Unfortunately, it's the negative, demeaning, bling, bling shit that gets all the attention.

This person has tried to express their opinion on what they think of rap music. We are all entitled to our own opinions on any subject. Just like some people on this site think Michael Jackson is a complete pervert with too many problems to even think about while others believe he is completely innocent and would never do any harm to a child. It's an opinion and we all have them and we should try to respect others.

total co-sign. It's a bit harsh to say that you hat an entire genre of music because within one genre you have many different styles and ideas that are being expressed. There will always be exceptions.

While it is true that some commercial rap glorifies violence and materialism and demeans women, not all of it does. As far as the whole thug life idea goes, some rappers are just all talk and are rapping about that lifestyle to look cool, but others are simply talking about where they're from, how that life has shaped them into who they are today, and how they never, ever want to go back.

Open your ears, jw1914. You're missing out on a great deal of good music.

There's an Arabic saying I've heard "A human's fingers aren't equal" which sums up my opinion about RAP MUSIC being NOT fully bad.

Its not RAP MUSIC's fault that u don't listen to L-Boogie, De La Soul, Common, Mos Def, Talip Kweli, Guru.

RAP MUSIC's mainstream world is crappy as an old in a summer day's crap(true moslty) but you'd be supriced at what u find deep that pile o' shit,,right down there, music NOBODY heared of(or should I say doesn't get the fair attention).

I guess thats why I always say that Rap Music is WOUNDED rather than DEAD!

I don't see anything in mainstream rap that you don't see in any other sector of the media. Women being degraded, violence, materialism, and immature male posturing. Turn on your television, open up the newspaper, or go to the movies and that's what you see. Some people just tend to do it more covertly while rap is in your face.

If it were truly un-American then it would be stopped. I say burn it all.

Do you hate the actual rapping or the beats themselves? The reason I ask is, there no such thing as "rap music" You can rap over rock, r&b, jazz or country if you felt like it.

here is a related question.

does rap music perpetuate racism?

meaning, if there are many people out there who share the same views about rap music as whomever started this thread, will that lead to these people having racist feelings towards blacks in general?

it does exist and i believe it exists in abundance especially with older whites for the sole reason of the stereotypical portrayal of blacks in both music and television/film. racism will continue to exist as long as these stereotypes perpetuate in the arts.

and yes, i understand that it is not the black artist's responsibility how his art is portrayed by middle aged whites. but this does pose a probable question.
