Aja, Pretzel Logic, and Two Against Nature are my favorite Steely albums.

I also highly recommend Donald Fagen's solo album "Kamakiriad".

Go get Aja, a Decade of Steely Dan, Two Against Nature, and Everything Must Go.

On a related note, get Donald Fagen's Nightfly and Kamakiriad (virtual S-Dan).

I only have one album Gaucho , Hey 19, the song Gaucho - + Dirty Works by Pointer Sisters is a great track
++ I guess that every Steely Dan's fan must have ( & love) the album Zazu by Rosie Vela produced by Fagen & Becker, it's a wondeful record

Jony:

hear, feel & see the GLORY of

The Royal Scam

in my opinion the "best" Steely Dan album, on the strength of the BRILLIANT "Kid Charlemagne", "Green Earrings", & "Sign In Stranger". everything except the title song (irony?) is very good.

EVERY Steely Dan album is great in its own way:

most of Can't Buy A Thrill rocks HARD, thanks to the masterful guitar work of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, then you hear a "jazzier" song like "Fire In The Hole" or "Dirty Work"

ditto Countdown To Ecstasy, which goes from a song like "Bodhisattva" (the live version on Steely Dan Gold/Expanded is even better than the album version) to a song like "Your Gold Teeth" to "The Boston Rag"

Pretzel Logic is probably the most "varied" album in the Steely Dan catalogue; I'm not going to even try to describe it, you have to listen to it for yourself. again, all the songs here are good, but the best would be "Pretzel Logic", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" & "Any Major Dude"

Katy Lied is their most "accessible" album; worth having just for "Chain Lightening"

Aja is, in fact:
STEELY DAN PERFECTION.

Gaucho is nearly as solid, if not overproduced, & contains the seductive "Babylon Sisters" & the bright, brassy "Time Out Of Mind"

Of the 2 solo Fagen albums, I prefer Kamakiriad to The Nightfly- the former has better songs & they are more consistent in terms of the album "theme"

Two Against Nature finds Becker & Fagen in solid form, especially considering ALL that time that passed between this album & Gaucho. My ALL-TIME favorite Steely Dan song is on this album:
"honey it's you.. Janie Runaway.."

everything must go is good, I was taken aback at how "uptempo" this album is..
I think the 3 best tracks on this album are the title track, "The Things I Miss The Most" &
"Green Book", which I like so much I play it at least twice in a row, each time I play this 1

So really, Jony

EVERY
Steely Dan album is worth owning.
take your time, get into each 1.
certain songs will of course make a bigger impression on you than others will..
& those that will-
you won't be able to get too far out of your head.

The MUSICAL BRILLIANCE of Steely Dan is virtually impossible to ignore.
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

one of the best songs ever is "Book of Liars". I too was surprised by "everything must go"...pleasantly. They are my favorite band always!

well, Stymie..

GOOD TASTE
(in music, for example)
is indeed 1 of the qualities that makes a woman attractive to me..
so..!
smile

it's cool that there are several orgers who dig this music, because it really seems that people either really LOVE Steely Dan or really h a t e them
(this of course, I couldn't even begin to understand)..

"Book Of Liars" I have only on the Alive In America cd.. that song is starting to grow on me..
I'll probably go ahead & buy Becker's solo album the next time I see it in a music store. for me it's still rather strange to hear him sing LEAD on a Steely Dan track..
though I do like his performance on "Slang Of Ages"
(the background singing during the chorus & the sax solo before theh bridge do help..)

did anyone here have the pleasure of seeing them on the
emg tour over the summer? if so, what did you think?
if not..
OH.. WHAT YOU MISSED!

batting eyes Hey Nineteen. Damn, what a great song. Everytime I hear that lick at the beginning, I just tilt my head to the side. There is no funkier sound on the planet to me. You know what's funny? I didn't know all the words to this song til I purchased the album at age 30.

yeah..

I was unsure about several of the HEY 19 lyrics for years!

before I saw the actual lyrics, I definitely heard something OTHER than "I was the dandy of Gamma Chi"..

I also thought it was "sweet DREAMS from Boston"

&

".. move down, MS. SCARSDALE"

& finally, I thought I heard "Cuervo Gold"
(it sounded enough like it)
but I didn't know what that was until I had about a HALF a bottle at a party 1 night..
biggrin

really, I'm been OFF on several Steely Dan lyrics!
in many of those cases, I've had to go back & relearn the lyrics

in TIME OUT OF MIND, I still sing
"I am holding the mystical spere, it's direct from MOSCOW"
even though the name in the song is of a different place, something that starts with the letter "l"
I still say "Moscow" because it makes more sense to me, especially when you hear the next line
"where people are rolling in the snow.. far from the world we know.."
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

I just listen to the Citizen Steely Dan box set. Every song they ever put out before Two Against Nature. Puts everything beautifully into one package.

and makes me have a better answer than all of you. tease

I just purchased the concert dvd from the Two Against Nature tour, which is as close as I can get to that since I missed that tour in '00..

I also saw the dvd for the "Making of Aja", which must be excellent..

& yes, I would probably say that the "best" song on the MASTERPIECE that is Aja..
is
"Peg"

I especially like Michael McDonald's background vocal contribution..

That's a really cool DVD. I've never seen them live either, but this was at least a fun watch.
