toei amos.. good to see people here know talent when they see it

i have been a big fan of tori,s since little earthquakes and i saw her live in 94 and it was hypnotic, as pure a voice as i have ever heard. i thought she went a bit self indulgent musically with the boys for pele album and her albums since have not been as good as her first two but i did enjoy scarlets walk. some of her songs are stunning and if she can keep her quirkyness in control, she will be one of the greats.

I agree. Followed closely by Choirgirl.

Funny how critics just didn't "get" Pele.

I've never been too fussed about Choirgirl. Maybe it'll hit me one day. shrug

Q gave BFP a blinding review. If you go to www.Q4music.com you'll probably be able to find it in their archives.

Its definitely my least favorite disc from her, but there are some great tracks on there. Her cover of Slayer's "Raining Blood" is fantastic. Truly haunting.

I think it's Hapiness is a Warm Gun. I prefer the live version of Enjoy the Silence.

SLG is a great record in my opinion. Not her best, but certainly worthwhile.

Pele is an amazing record - probably my favorite, although that title seems to veer back and forth between Pele and Choirgirl. But she has yet to do a weak album. Great to see so many Tori fans.

most fans would not in fact agree with that. Pele routinely wins Tori fan polls as her best album, with Choirgirl usually second.

That sounds pretty accurate just based on the Tori fans I know. Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink are the critics' favorites, but most fans have moved beyond those albums and prefer some of her newer work.

The awesome thing about Boys For Pele is that it was the first album Tori self-produced. The record company was a bit iffy on it, but Tori proved herself once again. This was the first Tori cd I bought. I love the way she tells the story during the Boulder CO concert that year.

"Um, when I started recording this record it was very interesting because, um... none of these record guys wanted to let a woman produce her own record, and they were very very nervous about letting me do this. And uh they were were much more nervous when the heard it [laughs from the audience]. And so what happened was, I turned in the record... and, um, I've never really had such a moment in my life. I mean, things were kind of bad when I pooped in my pants and uh I walked in and, um, you know... I sold a lot of records for this company... and I walked in---I'd had some pizza, a nice glass of wine and I was hangin with these girls, and I know it's a little dark, but you know, everybody needs a good bottle of wine and some depressing songs every once in a while. And so I walked in and, uh, this is what I met: [she sits stright up and plasters her face with the most austere look. Holds this position for about ten seconds. Laughter from the audience] So basically what I said was--after this record went platinum [a few hoots and laughs from us]--"it wasn't because of anything YOU all did..." but it was because of You [motioning with her shoulder toward the audience] guys. Record companies, radio had absolutely fuck-all to do with any of it [big cheers and applause]. But the one thing is, you guys Did, and this is one song that demanded to come tonight because, although she's not on this planet anymore, she was, um, probably the main song that gave me strength to withstand when everybody said I'd made a piece of shit."

I probably like them in this order.

1. Boys For Pele
2. From The Choirgirl Hotel
3. To Venus And Back
4. tie between Little Earthquakes and Under The Pink
5. Scarlet's Walk (although this is really growing on me)
6. Strange Little Girls (cuz I don't know it that well and it's all covers)
7. Y Kan't Tori Read (too old and not what she's about)

I would rate everything on my list from 1-5 with 4 stars or better though. She's consistently great.

I don't count Strange Little Girls at all. I tried to listen to it this morning and couldn't deal with Bonnie and Clyde and the rest is so dark and depressing, even for Tori!

yeah the Boulder, CO show is legendary... great set.

I took a week off from work in 2001 and drove around, going to 6 of the SLT shows... one of the best times of my life!! so much fun and the shows were so incredible. I would love to do it again, when she tours solo again. I MUCH prefer her solo than with the band.

am i the only fan who found "boys for pele" a disappointment. i could not get into that album at all. the songs are all over the place. the only redeeming feature was that stunning voice but i found the album self indulgent.

Tori has played Boulder twice in '96, here are the set lists:

11/10/96
Beauty Queen/Horses
Yes, Anastasia
Hurt / Bells For Her (on harpsichord)
Father Lucifer
Cornflake Girl
Doughnut Song
Little Earthquakes
Take To The Sky
Mother
Crucify
Caught A Lite Sneeze
Talula
Me and a Gun

Encore 1 -
She's Leaving Home
Baker Baker

Encore 2 -
In The Springtime Of His Voodoo
Hey Jupiter

11/11/96
Beauty Queen/Horses
I'm On Fire
The Waitress
Hurt/ Caught A Lite Sneeze
Cornflake Girl
Honey
Pretty Good Year
Marianne
Here In My Head
Precious Things
God/Amazing Grace/God (Acapella, banging the harpsichord)
Talula
Me and a Gun

Encore 1 -

Encore 2 -
Tear In Your Hand

Hey Jupiter (on piano)

The show from 11/11 has been widely bootleged. It's such a great show, Tori's really getting wild on stuff like Precious Things and Caught A Lite Sneeze. One of my favourite live-shows she offered.
