Old School Joint of the day (David Bowie)

I swear I wouldn't know what this song was, if it wasn't 4 P.Diddy, but now that I heard the original track, I gotta say it quit funky & amazing. The old School joint of the day is ...

Let's Dance- David Bowie

First song I knew by him. I know it's cheesy but I love it.

Modern Love and Let's Dance were Bowie's last decent singles even though they are repugnantly commercial.
And if you were introduced to Bowie's music by P. Diddy, well, uh...

Maybe his last really popular ones. But I can think of several that are worthy choices.

Modern Love
Without You
Blue Jean
Loving The Alien
This Is Not America
Absolute Beginners
As The World Falls Down
You Belong In Rock 'N' Roll
Jump They Say (blows the pants off anything on Let's Dance)
Black Tie, White Noise
The Buddha of Suburbia
Hallo Spaceboy
Strangers When We Meet
Little Wonder
Dead Man Walking
Seven Years In Tibet
I'm Afraid Of Americans
I Can't Read
Thursday's Child (brilliant!)
Survive
Slow Burn
New Killer Star (single of the year?)
Never Get Old

I love all these songs.

Now see that’s one thing I would say P Diddy was good at… He sampled a lot of pop beats that introduced hip hop kids like me 2 whole genre they probably wouldn’t have paid any attention 2 otherwise. I listen 2 people like David Bowie, Areosmith and all those different type of bands, because of that.

Now Andre3000/outkast with the prince a will introduce a lot of younger fan’s 2 Prince …… sampling can be a good thing when you don’t over do it, know what I’m saying?

Thats a ggod list that highlights Bowies songs from the mid-eighties forward. Doesn't even touch his work from the 70's & early 80's. While they haven't been commercial pop hits all those songs demonstrate how he hasn't lost it & keeps on chugging out quality songs. A great musician - a career musician. Exploring his songbook is well worth investigating.

As The World Falls Down and Jump They Say??? My god, those are some terrible songs. Possibly I Can't Read stands as a great Bowie single, but besides that from the later 'daze' it's pretty slight stuff. I think Bowie & his super-model wife (Rod Stewart anyone?) doing Hilfiger ads pretty much sums up his artistic statement as of late.

TRON! I really don't think "Let's Dance" is cheezy at all! It packs a punch, and everytime I hear it it's like the first time I ever heard it.

"Let's Dance" and P's "Let's Go Crazy" are a couple songs that are my earliest recollections of feeling music in my life (I would have been 3).

Hallo Spaceboy
Strangers When We Meet
Dead Man Walking
Little Wonder

All great songs.
I was a Bowie fan in the 70's but after Lets Dance I drifted off & didn't pick him back up until the 90's and while he's got his excesses musically he still pounds out some good solid songs.

My question is:
What does this have to do with Michael Jackson?
I thought this was the MJ Forum.

I know what you mean square

The idea that P Diddy is introducing people to Bowie...disbelief

It ought to be mentioned that Let's Dance is seen as his 'sellout' album. He has a body of work in the seventies that rivals if not surpasses Princes work in the eighties.

First Bowie song I remember. And one of my least favourites.

I have since bought many of his records, and I'm going to duck for cover now, but my favourite bowie tracks are...

Oh You Pretty Thing...

and...

wait for it...

Time Will Crawl!

I love his 90's work. But I got into him in the 90's so it holds a lot of weight for me.

Many people think he hasn't put out a good album/single since '83 and I was listing some examples of what I feel are good singles.

it's alright, i guess. it was the beginning of the end for him creatively, for about a decade.

i always hated this song until he re-arranged the live performance of it in the last several years. now i like it a lot. the new arrangement has brought out the better qualities in it, and breathed new life into the original for me.

Just this morning I heard Modern Love on the radio and I was amazed at what a great song it is! I'm your average Bowie 70's purist so I hadn't played the let's Dance album for years. But I'm definitely playing it tonight. (Ho-hum, 'tonight', geddit? Don't think I'll be playing THAT one anytime soon.)

I Agree.

The only decent tracks on let's dance are these:

Modern Love
Ricochet
Shake It
Criminal World

The rest is utter crap.

give Tonight another try. it's surprisingly not awful, if you've erased all memory of it and are listening with fresh ears.

Bowie knows how to pile on the funk; I really like "Fame" and "Stay" from his mid-70's stuff.

Anyone got other funky Bowie favorites?

I know I'd probably risk getting a brick thrown at me but that was Bowie's best 80's album right next to Scary Monsters.
