"Rappin With the Jackson Five" (The bros. "interview" each other)-1972 Jermaine: This is Jermaine Jackson, sitting here rapping with my brothers, you know, the Jackson 5. Michael: Yeah. Jack, what do you dig about show biz, hmm? Jackie: Well, show business is my thing, you know. I always wanted to be in show business. I guess you did, too, Mike. Michael: Yeah. Jackie: I love it very much. Jermaine: Marlon, out of all of our albums, what is your favorite song? Marlon: Uh, I'll pick I'll Be There. Jermaine: I'll Be There? Marlon: Yeah. It was... it's, it's just... one of my favorites and it's... Jackie: Yeah. Marlon: ... a great song, too. Tito: Right, I can dig it. Jermaine: What about you, Tito? Tito: Well, I like I Want You Back. I'm crazy about that. Jermaine: That was our first song. Tito: Right, that was our very first. Went right to the top. Michael: Well, I like Can I See You in the Morning and I'll Be There. I like I'll Be There cuz it's slow and it's our first time doing a slow song and I like slow songs. Jackie: Well, don't forget about The Love You Save, man. That was jumpin' Tito: That was jumpin. Michael: Jumpin' like hot beans on a Sunday morning. Jackie: Right on. Tito: Right on. Jackie [laughs] Jermaine: The ones I like, uh, ABC and... Jackie: Yeah, ABC. Marlon: Who is your favorite group? Michael: I like the Supremes, and I like the Four Tops and I like Diana Ross... Jackie: You got a lot of them! Michael: We just did a show in Miami, right? Jackie: Right. Michael: And we saw the Tempts. Jackie: How was the show? Michael: It was great. Jermaine: What do you like best when you're on the road, Marlon? Marlon: I like to... eat! [everyone laughs] One of my favorites! Jermaine: How about you, Mike? Michael: Well, I like staying in hotels, and when we get off-stage, I like to order, uh, order a lot of pops and have fun and watch tv, then go to bed. Jermaine: What do you mostly order? Michael: Um, hamburgers, bacon, sandwiches, barbeque, soul food! Michael: Tito, who is your favorite actor? Tito: Well, I'd say John Wayne. Jackie: John Wayne? Tito: Yeah. Michael: Who's your favorite actor, Marlon? Marlon: I'd say, uh, James Colburn. Michael: Yeah, I like him, too. Jackie: My man, James Cagney. Michael: I like James Bond. Tito: How about Brother Sidney? Jermaine: James Cagney and Sidney Poitier. Michael: Yeah, yeah. Marlon: Jackie, what are your love and hates? Jackie: Well, I love my basketball and I hate the cold weather. I love Gary, Indiana, but I still hate the cold. Tito: Right on, brother. Marlon: Hey, wasn't it freezin' in Gary when we went back? Jackie: Woo, 'bout 6 below zero, man! Michael: And that's cold! Tito: But you know, it was really fun. We went back home and everything was great. They named a street after us. Jackie: We got keys to the city, you know, each one of us. Marlon: Yeah. Jackie: Got all kind of awards from our friends. Marlon: The helicopter ride into... Jackie: I was kind of scared. Michael: I was scared, too. Tito: First time on a helicopter is a trip! Michael: Tito, I saw a few of your pictures you done. Do you like 'em? Tito: Yeah, that's my bag. One day I caught you asleep and one day your hair was braided and I took some flicks of you! Michael: For real? Tito: When you were asleep! Michael: Show me that picture when you get home! [Marlon laughs] Michael: Tito, what is your favorite sport, what do you like? Tito: Well, I love baseball. I love archery. Michael: What do you like, Marlon? Marlon: I like golf and soccer. Baseball. Basketball. Football. Jackie: What do you like, Mike? Marlon: Yeah! Michael: I love swimming! Jackie: Yeah [laughs]. Michael: Do you? Do you like swimming? Jackie: Yeah, I like swimming. Michael: How about you, 'Maine? Jermaine: It's okay with me. Tito: I remember when I was in Gary, I dug on a chick at Gary Roosevelt High School. We was doing our very first talent show. And I messed up playing my guitar from staring at this chick, and I was nervous on the other half. And Michael, he was so nervous, he dropped a microphone! [laughs] Jackie: Hey, Tito! Tito: But anyway we took it away. Jackie: Tito! Tito! Remember the first time we started, you know, Michael used to play the bongos, you know... Tito: Yeah, I remember them old days. Jackie: And you had a lead guitar and Jermaine didn't know what a bass guitar was, he had another lead guitar. Tito: Old days, so nice to remember. Marlon: Jermaine, what do you like about girls? Jermaine: I like girl that are quiet with nice pretty brown eyes. Tito: Right on, brother. Jermaine: Hmm, dah-dah... Not too loud... Jackie: [laughing] Dah-dah! Jermaine: Sort of shy, but not shy but... Michael: (sarcastically) Yeah, you like 'em shy. [Marlon laughs] Jermaine: Sweet and... Jackie: That's how Hazel is. Jermaine: ... smart and bright. Tito: I agree 100%, brother. How about you, Michael? Michael: Well, I like 'em with pretty big eyes [pause, then a laugh] and, uh, let me see what else I like about gals. [Marlon breaks out laughing] Tito: How about their personality, Mike? Michael: Yeah, I like their personality, that's one thing I like about 'em. What do you like, Jackie? Jackie: Well, I like girls mostly on the slim side, you know. You know, I agree with you, Jermaine, about personality and looks. Tito: Right, that's what I like most of all. I like a girl that's not too loud and not too quiet. Jackie: Who'll give me all the lovin' Tito: Right! Michael: When you get older, Tito, are you going to stick with the group, or what are you going to do? Tito: I'ma stick with my group as long as my group be here, you better believe it. Michael: Are you going to be an actor and be with the group still? Tito: Well, my plans are going to engineering school. I'd like to invest my money in studios. Michael: Well, I was planning on being an actor. And singer, something like Sammy Davis style. Jackie: Yeah, that's good, Mike. Good thinking, son. Michael: What about you, Jermaine? [laughing] Jackie: Yeah, what about you, Jermaine? Jermaine: Songs and things. Michael: Oh, you gonna be a writer. Jackie: Yeah. Tito: Right on, brother, I can dig that! Amen. --- MJ talks about dating, among other things (exerpt is from Teen's Star! Magazine)-1972 Q: Michael, your fans want to know your ideas about a first date! MJ: On a first date, I like to bring a girl over to my house for a barbeque and a swim, especially on a warm summery evening! I know that some chicks get mad if you don't take them somewhere fancy and spend alot of money on them on a date, but I'm not interested in those kinds of girls. I want someone who I can feel comfortable with just sitting and talking to, or sharing a fun, casual time with! I'm not sayin' that we wouldn't ever go out. I love to go out to movies, concerts, and restaurants, but I think it's important to know one another on a first date, and you can't if you go to watch somethin' all night! Q: Are you a 'gentleman' on a date? MJ: I never gave it much thought. Opening doors for girls is something that I just do automatically without thinking, like scratchin' my head when it itches! When you're taught all your life to do polite things for girls, you just can't forget it! It's second nature to you, like breathing or tapping your feet to music! Q: How do you feel about kissing on a first date? MJ: I can dig it! I think that if you dig a chick enough to ask her out, you're crazy if you don't want to kiss her. And, if she accepted the date, she likes you and probably wants to be kissed. So, I couldn't think of any reason why you shouldn't! I think I'd like to wait 'till the end of the date before I kissed her, though! I think most girls are afraid you're comin' on too fast if you kiss them right away. But, if I could tell that chick I was with was just waitin' to be kissed, I wouldn't mess around wastin' time! I'd take her in my arms, bend her face back to rest on the back of her seat, and slowly lean toward her, gazin' into her eyes and talking in a slow, smooth voice. Then, I'd press my lips against hers, gently at first, then harder and harder until we're both lost in a soul kiss of true love. Q: How do you feel about honesty between a guy and a girl? MJ: I think that bein' honest with one another is important when you're gettin' serious with a chick, and don't want to have her goin' out with other guys. You have to be loyal and true to one another, or your love will never last! But, when you're dating lots of chicks, and the chicks you date go with other guys, honesty isn't so important. Don't get me wrong, though! I don't think lyin' to someone is ever a good or a smart thing to do! But, as long as you haven't made any promises to each other, you have the right to keep some things for yourself! For instance, if you've been dating a chick on and off and she dates other guys, and she asks you where you were when she phoned your house and didn't get an answer, I don't think it's any of her business to know you were out with a different girl! I don't think I have the right to pry into her life either! Q: What would you do if you fell in love with a girl who was going steady with someone else? MJ: Well, if I knew from the beginning that she was going with another guy, I probably wouldn't date her, no matter how much I wanted to! But, if I didn't know she was going steady, and I found out after I fell in love with her, I think I'd be pretty mad! Even if I thought that she didn't do it to be cruel, and was just too scared to tell him her true feelin's, I think I'd tell her in a kind, understanding way, to figure out what she was gonna do, and come back after she'd done it. Q: Michael, what do you admire in others? MJ: I admire people who are really dedicated to their music and to entertaining people! That's why I admire Sammy Davis Jr, and hope to be like hime when I grow up! He's a super professional, who puts a spell over his audience like some kind of magician. Singin' and dancin' his heart out to give his audience a thrill they'll never forget! It takes many years to get like that, and that's my goal. Q: What is the one thing you dislike in a person? MJ: I guess it's conceited, snobbish people that really bother me! Some people are very egotistical, and think they're better than everyone else! They're always talkin' about themselves, and can't listen to you when you're trying to tell them something about yourself. They keep looking around to see if someone's lookin' at them, instead of looking directly at you, listening to what you're sayin'! It's like talking to a stone wall. When I meet a chick like that, I just turn off right away! Q: Here's a hard question - what one thing in your personality would you change if you could? MJ: Well, my Mom says that I'm a procrastinator, which means that I put off things I don't want to do. I know that it's better to get things out of the way as soon as you can, like cleaning your room, or doing your chores but sometimes I have a hard time gettin' around to them and keep putting them off! I always like to show my fans that I dig them and appreciate all they've done for me by holdin' their hand and lookin' right in their eyes as I talk to them. When a chick takes the time and trouble to come see me, no matter where I am or how busy I am, I'm gonna do all I can so that when she leaves she'll really feel that it was worth her while! Here are my promises: Promise Number One: Whether or not I win the title Superstar of '72, I'm going to continue to work even harder at putting together an exciting show (like learning to play the piano!), so that when you come to see us sing and dance, you'll remember our show all your life! Promise Number Two: I promise that we'll try to make our concert costumes real 'baaad' and foxy to keep you turned on! And I want you to send me any J-5 costume ideas you might have! Promise Number Three: I promise to bring lots of personally autographed pictures of the J-5 on the road with me, so that when I see you in concert, you'll have something to really remember us by! Promise Number Four: To love and cheris each of my sweet-faced fans forever --- "Hallelujah Day: Meeting the J5 in 72" by Steven Ivory It can be exciting to see anyone famous in person, let alone personal idols, and there mine were, just a few feet away -- Michael, Marlon, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Randy -- in all their street-clothed, road-weary glory. Bringing up the rear were cousin and drummer Johnny Jackson, keyboardist Ronnie Rancifer and the omnipresent Bill Bray, an off-duty LAPD officer reverently referred to by discerning J5 fans simply as "The Jacksons' Security Man." Jackie, looking pleasantly in our direction, seemed headed our way, but was shown to another entrance. The others, friendly if a bit shy, followed big brother. There was no entourage, no fanfare. The J5 concert was a big deal in town, to be sure, but there were no keys to the city, no radio giveaways. Just the Jacksons, starting another work day. Fact was, by 1972 Oklahoma City was just another stop on yet another national tour for an act whose comet had begun to dim. With Skywriter, their current album, ultimately reaching only #44 on Billboard's pop album chart, Jacksonmania was on clearly on the wane. Donny and I didn't know this, nor did we care. All we knew is that while our friends endured fifth period, we were sitting on the fifth row of a J5 rehearsal, worshipping at the gleaming red double-bass, J5 logo-adorned drum kit that was our personal shrine. We weren't the only ones playing hooky, though. To my chagrin, in walked two of my schoolmates, Mendell Brooks and Dolene Morgan. We executed Mission Impossible antics to get in here; Brooks and Morgan, who had come to the box office to buy tickets for the concert, simply walked through the front door. Their presence awakened a flirtatious Michael, who perked up when he saw the girls. Curiously, Jackson's advances were anything but those of a precocious kid. From the stage, the 14 year-old singer hit on these girls with the subtle, salacious verve of a young pimp, his eye winking and index finger slyly, earnestly beckoning, all without uttering a word. As jealous as a straight guy could be, today I still don't know what was more peculiar --watching a boy attempt to hustle older chicks with the game of a 30 year-old man, or the fact that Michael's overtures effectively paralyzed two of the most rambunctious girls at Douglass High, suddenly too shy to leave their seats. While Michael, Jackie, Marlon and Randy milled around the stage, Jermaine strapped on his Fender Jazz bass and directed the band through their new single, "Hallelujah Day," which, as a recording, was a corny pop-gospel confection, but which this day at the hands of Jermaine, Tito, Rancifer and Johnny, found a pocket only hinted at on record, swaying with the tight authority of a rhythm section that had obviously jammed together for years. But as the music churned, we came upon a sight no fan magazine prepared us for: Tito in sunglasses, dutifully strumming guitar while from of the corner of his famous mouth dangled a ... cigarette? A cigarette! Where does it say Tito smokes? Or that Michael is a hardcore flirt? Or that Jackie and Marlon occasionally collide when they run through choreography for "Looking Through The Windows"? Or that ol' stuck-up Jermaine, our fave, could become so quietly annoyed with giddy strangers eyeballing his every move that he would have concert hall management ask us to leave? I'll be damned if Right On! hadn't left out THIS part, the part that said Papa Joe's boys were human. Nevertheless, when the white limo did finallyemerge from the Myriad Convention Center, Donny's daddy's green Ford Maverick was on its tail. We yelped and screamed and slapped one another fve as we followed none other than the Jackson 5 up Eastern Aenue, past my school and into the city's black business dstrict at 23rd and Eastern, eventually ending up at a westside retail record store, where Marlon asked the clerk for a Stylistics record. That's where we made our move. Jermaine let Donny take his picture (Bill Bray said it was all right as long we didn't take any group shots) and the rest of the fellas were as sweet as pie. Marlon, who posed with me, even attempted to make small talk ("What kind of camera is that?"). It was all over in about ten breathtakingly fleeting minutes, with Bray looking at the boys and pointing to his watch. When we fell over ourselves saying goodbye to Michael, the young star grinned and coyly shot back, "I ain't gone yet." But in a minute he was, and all we had to prove to the free world that we really DID meet the Jackson 5 were the photos Donny took, most of which didn't come out. It was all so tremendous -- and somehow anti-climatic. They were so ...human. That night in concert, however, they were back to being their perfect selves, entrancing the Myriad with basic sound and lights, old school charisma and skilled, traditional showmanship. Right On! was right: On the day of a concert, if a fan went to the venue around noon, they could get lucky and meet their favorite performer. Nearly three decades later, the Jacksons, grown men mostly with grown children, are now Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductees who, every couple of years, mention the word reunion. Right On! Magazine, celebrating its 30th anniversary under the direction of longtime editor Cynthia Horner, is still going strong, pin-ups of the Sylvers and Soul Train Gang having long been replaced by Gangsta Rappers and Destiny's Child. But wouldn't you know they still write about Michael Jackson, who, since I first met him, has morphed into one of the biggest, most influential and startlingly enigmatic pop stars in the history of the planet. Not even Right On! could have predicted the rest. --- You can find more retro articles at www.j5-collector.com Michael never stopped! | |
